toolbox behind seat...

Post by abe »

has anyone here made a small toolbox that would fit on top of the gastank and behind the seat? I am thinking something like the toolbox the 48-52 pickups had behind their seat. I am looking for a place to keep some stuff rather than on the seat or on the passenger floor...

Abe,
There is a rare behind the seat, (I've only seen four or five of them in the lat 10 years or so) metal tool storage / box that comes up here on the internet ever once in awhile. Maybe one of the guys that has one will pipe in here soon with a picture. It was made for our trucks that had auxillary tanks with no tank behind the seat I'd built one on my old style Bronco under the hood on the inner fender-and built a similar one on one of my dents on the inner fender.

The factory behind-the-seat storage is actually made of ABS plastic, not metal. I have some pictures here. (The dentside trucks had a metal version, I believe.) But adding one of these, assuming you can actually find one, is a lot of work, since you have to also install a different fuel tank, and might be considered as too much work to simply add a little bit of storage.

Since the top of the seat-back comes very close to the top of the fuel tank when it's fully back, there really wouldn't be much room at all to add storage on top of the tank. How about an in-bed toolbox? You can either get the cross-bed style or the kind that sits down along the side by the fenderwell. Or, assuming you have a LWB, you could find a factory bed with an in-bed storage compartment on the right side.

If you want more storage for your dump bed F350, they make storage boxed that bolt to the frame that will be under the flatbed on it. Just my :2cents: of suggestion.

This thread reminded me of something I just happened to photograph in the junkyard a few years ago.

Here's a unique, possibly hand-made metal storage rack that was behind the seat of a mid-70s F-100. It caught my attention, so I made a picture of it.

Don't know if if anyone else has seen one like this or not.

I like my seat back a little bit away from the back of the cab so I can put my right hand there and my fingers down the back when I drive. I think there might be some space if it is kept low as the seat back curves back as it goes up. I will fab up some different sized boxes out of cardboard and if one fits see if I can get the local votech school to make one out of sheet metal...

I am looking for an underbed toolbox, for tarps, bungee cords, my 6x6 block of wood I use for an E-brake, etc. They are quite expensive, may have to get one made at a local sheetmetal shop. I am just brainstorming about a little space for smaller stuff in the cab...

Thanks everyone! Will let you know what I come up with.

The old couple I bought my bump from had installed a Pic Pocket organizer behind the seat. It is a heavy tan canvas that clips to the back of the seat and screws to the back cab wall. With the seat back, it is folded up like a taco. When you pull the seat forward it opens up the entire length of the bench seat. It has a bunch of different sized pockets for oil, tools, rags etc. I love it, don't know what I'd do without it. It looks pretty vintage, not sure when it was made. I'll take some pics of mine if it would help.
Mine is installed along with the aux fuel tank.
