So i go over to my parents house tonight (where i keep my trucks and tools) and my dad tells me that there was a note on the front door this morning. I figured "great, one of the neighbors is being 'nice' and telling me to clean up my projects or hes gonna call the city. turns out one of the neighbors want me to work on thier car. Ill probably pass on it, just cause i really dont wanna do side work after i get off work unless its on my own vehicles.

Has this ever happened to any one else? Has anyone seen your projects in the garage/driveway and wanted you to work on thier cars? this is the first time its happened to me.

Dude do it, i put ads up a few times a month on craigslist for simple break jobs an little things saying that ill come to your driveway a do the job in a few hours. You would be amazed at the calls that come in. helped fund the 500ci stoker motor for my Dart

Try it. You might find you're better off on your own. How many successful career dealer mechanics you see out there?

I do a lot of machinework that has nothing to do with the parts I produce. I've found the best way to handle it is only do the job if I know them and they understand my terms of payment or they stand there while I machine it so they understand what goes into it. I always ask people to pay what they think the job is worth. I had a 90 year old guy write me a $20 check after I spent 5 hours modifying some old Dodge wheel hubs for modern bearings and I've had a guy give me $100 for boring out a lovejoy coupling in 5 minutes. I'm always happy with whatever they pay. People usually pay more than fair though. I once destroyed a $600 cutter body making a first article for a $2 spacer. Didn't even get the job. Made $200 and hour on other days. It all works out.

Being a custom wood worker all my life working for other shops. I used to take on side jobs and make more in a couple of days than i could make all week working for the shops. I would take the jobs every chance i could. Made some good money too. As i get older i seem not to take on the amount of side jobs i used to. Yes, the money was good but the hours sucked. When people want a piece of furniture now, i would ask them how big of a hurry are they for it. I still pick up sides jobs as long as i can do it at my on pace. Some people agree with deal, some don't. I have built many entertainment centers for clients while my TV set on some wood box i picked up some where.Now i have fixed myself time to build things that i wanted such as bedroom suit, entertainment center, display case for my diecast cars, and much more. Far as side work that we are talking about, i think it's ok for anyone as long as it don't interfere with enjoying life. I guess i was doing for others when i should have been doing for myself.

I usually get someone knocking on the garage door once a month looking for help or I'll see a neighbors car or truck on stands for a couple days and finally catch them out and ask if they need help.
