Working on 2002 Ford Ranger Super Cab 2wd, 3.0 "U" (NON-FLEX) V6, 5sp auto.
48,000 miles (yes that is correct forty eight thousand)
Check Engine light on, 1 code Cylinder 1 misfire.
Misses in cold start and under load.
Plug #1 looks dodgy, gap is about .55 (.44 is the specification)
Plug #2 looks less dodgy, gap is about .48
Wire #1 3.62K ohms (although it does have a spot on it I don't like, almost looks like its been arcing to the coil connector)
Wire #2 5.29K ohms
Injector #1 14.2 ohms
Has Motorcraft Platinum AGSF32PGM (At least in #1 and #2, from the web seems common for them to have 2 different plugs from factory)
I am thinking I just need to start by throwing a set of plugs in it even though they are 100,000 mile plugs? Anyone agree/disagree?

Its a good place to start. Doesnt seem like they should have gone bad this soon. but, stranger things have been known to happen. Its kinda hard to troubleshoot the misfire without eliminating plugs and wires as a cuplrit. Id say go for it.

The coil packs seem to be common failures, but seems they take out two cylinders at a time... I cant find a ohm value they are supposed to have.

Wow I would have thought the plug would have been sapceptable to varering combustion pressures via the miss under load. what did you have to go through Robert?

Re: Check me on this - 2002 Ranger Cyl 1 Misfire
Yeah that was my thinking as well.
I put a set of plugs in it, I don't feel too bad about that since they looked raunchy and it did in fact have 2 different plugs in it. Set of "OE motorcraft" was ~20.00.
That did not change it.
So I dug around for a spare wire to test with... That didn't change it.
Checked for vacuum leaks...
Checked compression...
Ohmed the injectors...
Ohmed the coil pack...
used inductive timing light to check for spark on all CYL...
If it had been missing on 1/5 I'd have gone right for the coil pack. If it had been completely dead I could have tested for it...
I don't know why nothing can ever be easy...
OE Motorcraft coil pack was ~72.00. Figured I would feel worse about paying the Ford dealer half an hour labor to tell me it was the coil pack than I would throwing the coil pack on and it not fixing it.
New coil pack is much newer part number...
Once I got the old coil pack off there is evidence of cracking in the epoxy potting under the 1/5 coil.

I had a focus that was doing the same thing, missing under load until you floored it and was missing when i first started it.
found the screws had losened on the coil pack, tightened them up and fixed the problem, Easy enuff
That was last year. Its started doing the same again and had a scan done and told its the O2 sencer. Getting a new one this weekend to see if that fixes the problem.
