How do you insure your truck?

Post by alvald83 »

I have a '69 F250, that started out as a $600 truck, but is now worth much more. I still have only liability insurance, and was just wondering what other owners are doing?

2x...Liability only. I figure I can just take off the aftermarket/upgraded parts and get another one if it ever gets wrecked... and it will definitely be a shortbed.

I have insurance trough chubb http://www.chubbcollectorcar.com
Agreed value. No mileage limit. Reasonable rates.
I haven't had a claim so I cain't say how they respond.
The policy is through my local agent.
Hope this helps.

On my International I have liability and comprehensive(for the windshield) only and nothing on my f100 since its not being driven right now. The main reason I cant justify going full coverage is if I get into a wreck I am gonna fix it up myself anyways so the 40 per year can go to my pickup restore/repair fund.

Lib and comp. Used comp to have a dent repaired in the pass door that was put in as it sat in my driveway. Cost me $50. deductable which was cheap. The shop had to paint the whole door. I like comp due to it doesn't cost much and covers fire theft vandalizum and glass. Rates aren't allowed to be raised due to comp claims. In this state anyway. AAA does offer full coverage, at this time I choose not to carry it on the 68.

I have always used Allstate, and they have always treated me right when I needed them. I only have liability on my '70, but recently had an eye opener. My truck got hit while sitting in the parking lot of a local mechanic shop in January. The kid who hit me had liability only on his car. I took it to the local body shop, which is a hotrod shop as well, and they gave me an estimate of $2081.00 just to repair the lower front corner of the bed. The thing that made the difference was that it has original paint, and HAD a perfect bed. Surprisingly, State Farm never balked at all. They paid me $2069 and I had a check within a few days. They even offered to give me a loaner car. The point is, our trucks are being recognized as the classics they have become, and are valued as such. I'm beginning to think about getting some more coverage just in case I hit a patch of ice, or whatever. Of course the original paint thing can only be played once. Also, when I told them that it was an F100, and that the Model was "Custom", they kinda misconstrued it as being a customized truck, even though I explained to the local agent what I meant. I'm so glad someone posted this question. I've been kicking this same dilemma around since my wife hit a deer a year & a half ago. It has definitely helped me.

I have Grundy Collector Insurance and it is agreed value that I set at $10,000 only costs a premium of $160 per year. As long as it is not a primary or secondary transportation and it is stored in a closed and locked garage when not in use, then it can be considered a collector. No mileage limits, but recommendations are not to take it to work, and use it mainly for recreational cruising and car shows. I fit into this category perfectly, and I didn't want to pay for full coverage on regular insurance and pay five times as much money for not even one-tenth the coverage! Hope this helps.

Wow...
Just did an online quote with the Haggerty folks mentioned above and I could save about 300 a year for insurance on my 48 pan. I'll have to dig up my policy and compare the coverage. Also gonna check the Grundy folks mentioned.

I also have Hagerty on my 72 F-250 4X4, Full coverage, no deductible, declared value of $20,000 for $200 per year. I don't have their road service, it was about $30 more but I have AAA so I didn't need it. The truck is not my daily driver, but there is no millage limit on how much I can drive it. I'm in a rural area of North Carolina, rates can vary from state to state and where you live in the state also can impact the cost.
I have never had a claim with Hagerty, but I have have know some who did and they were pleased with dealing with them.

Have a great day and good luck with your Insurance
