Thanks for the welcome. Still don't have the truck in my possession. Here's some NC title transfer trivia for you guys;

The truck's seller gave me the title with the previous owner's signature on the back. Seller never titled the truck in his own name. ("floated" it I guess)

Should I go pick up the truck, drive it 1 hr home and try working out the title with a local notary? Or should I drive out there, try (again) to get up with the guy who's name is on the title, and find a notary in his town?

Charlotte, NC area but I've never bought a car in the state (TX transplant)

Got truck, alternator not charging so battery died about 5 miles from home. Will try to charge it and drive it home tomorrow. Just ready to have it here.

Don't know about NC but here in Georgia, on vehicle's this old, a bill of sale OR a signed title is all that's necessary to register, not both, and a title is not required on vehicles over 25 years old. I've done either/or several times here. I'd suggest just taking the signed title to the DMV, play dumb, and ask them if you need anything else.
