Almost Time To DD F100

Post by Subzero »

In a little over a month I will hopefully be able to drive the F100 on a daily bases. It has been on a hiatus from use most of the summer due to brake problems. It is now at the shop having all the things fixed that I couldn't do myself as I don't have the space or tools to do the major brake fixes. As soon as it is done at the repair shop the truck will be dropped off at the upholstery shop to get a 1994 F150 bench seat put in and redone in black vynil in the style of the original. The new seat features headrests which helps with whiplash if a wreck occurred. ( Why does it seem trucks are always slower on getting safety equipment than cars?). If the truck does well with the task of taking me around 25 miles max a day and doesn't have too much issues then I may sell the 02 F150 ( gets an outstanding 3 mpg better than the F100   ) and solely drive the F100. A lot has been done over the last six months to get it ready here's all I can remember,

1. Hole patched in floor
2. Power steering flushed and new fluid
3. Exhaust leak fixed
4. 1 axle seal replace
5. Wipers replaced
6. Windshield leak fixed
7. Plugs changed
8. Truck washed and waxed to protect paint
7. Engine cleaned
8. Master Cylinder replaced and all bleeder valves replaced

Currently Being Fixed:
Rear brake
Heat control valve
Brake warning light

The oil will be changed again before as its almost been 6 months.

Is there anything else I should check or replace before using the truck as a daily driver? Does anyone else daily their bumpside here? Thanks

I forgot to mention the points will also be changed soon. The trans oil looks good and is full. I haven't looked at the rear end yet though. Thanks

"Is there anything else I should check or replace before using the truck as a daily driver?"
I'd suggest removing the rear-end breather hose and the nipple, make sure it's clean. Nearly every older vehicle I've owned had some gunk in there, a couple have been completly plugged up. Wouldn't hurt to change the gear oil too,it might be the original fluid!

"Does anyone else daily their bumpside here?"
I drive the '71 every day hauling lawnmowers, lots of yard waste/tree trimmings and Home Depot stuff for my never-ending home remodel/landscaping. The 300/6 makes it affordable to drive daily.

I drive my 70F350 almost everyday.... I would say 4 days a week in the summer. I now yards and trim bushes and haul mulch, so it is my work truck. I don't use just to run errands as it is a gas hog.....

Ok, I'm glad to hear some one else is also daily driving their trucks. The big 360 is a huge gas hog for me getting around 10 mpg town driving. I sometimes wish I had gotten the 300 6 cyl as it seems to be somewhat easier on your wallet. My 2002 f150 gets none much better as I said in my original thread post so there is not much of a difference for me unless I got another more fuel efficient car. On a different topic I think my truck may be missing the tire iron as I can't find it inside the truck. Where is it usually stored at? Everything else for a tire change is there including a very shady looking original jack and its rod. I dont have the truck to inspect the breather hose right now but where is the tube located at?

"I dont have the truck to inspect the breather hose right now but where is the tube located at?"

It's on the axle housing, driver's side. The nipple that the rubber hose attaches to also holds down the rear brake lines' junction block, it unscrews out of the housing.

Ok thank you. Scratch the fixed windshield leak, it still does right in the bottom corners. How should I fix this? I've already tried the silicon.

Always nice to be able to drive one.. To me, they are useless if they don't work. lol..
I don't drive mine every day. These days, I usually only drive it when I need it for work,
which is fairly often.
But it's been daily drivable pretty much since I got it in 1999, with short breaks to replace
the engine, rebuild the front end, etc.. It was out of service for eight days when I did the
engine back in 2002, or whenever the heck it was.. I forgot now.. :/
Believe it or not, I'm still on the same spark plugs that I installed with that engine..
Over 10 years later! But it's still running OK. I have changed the points 2-3 times since
then. And I'm still on the same tires which I installed after totally rebuilding the front end
in 2003-2004 or so, and they still have about half their tread, and it's wearing even on the fronts.
Most all of that time since 1999 I've had other vehicles, so that keeps the miles put on the
truck to fairly low levels..
I can hop in it right now and go anywhere I want. It's ugly, but it's reliable.

Mine has been reliable besides the brakes and it had fresh tires put on right before I got it. I've never had the engine fail to start and it always starts up on the first try unless I flooded the engine or something. I hope to have many years of driving like you have. I put the new seat in today so hopefully on Monday it will go to the shop to get the seat redone.

The axle seal has leaked again as I said in the brakes section of the forums. Its being fixed now and will then hopefully ( keeping my fingers crossed) go to the upholstery shop. After it gets back I'm going to drain the radiator and put some new coolant in the truck before the winter. New condenser and rotor too now. I've finished my side project mini bike resto so it will go up for sale now and hopefully I can get some more fun money to get some cool things on the truck.
