Hi folks,
Been awhile since I've been on here but we still have our Scamper and use it all the time during the summer months. I recently made a blog post about it and the upgrades we have done to it, and a reader asked me a question that had me scratching my head. He referred to it as Camper Special, but I thought Sport Customs and Camper Specials were two different models. Ours is definitely an F350 Sport Custom, and was ordered as a chassis cab and had the camper built onto the chassis with a walk-through to the cab. I checked the "Technical Articles" section on here and decoding your VIN, but I couldn't find the answer to my question.
One other thing that has me scratching my head is the rear axle. According to my VIN, the axle code is "36" which is not listed on the decoding your VIN page, and I don't see any Dana 70's at all in the list. Our mechanic confirmed our rear axle is a Dana 70B. Maybe because it is a motorhome it was a special order or something.
Any ideas?
Cindy

Re: Camper Special/Sport Custom Question
The f350s of this era are acually pretty different than the f250 counterparts. the frames are HUGE compared to the f250s. the f350's did indeed use the dana 70 rear end. The camper special package consisted of a few things that helped beef up the f250 to accomondate a camper. like springs or brakes and electric wiring built in. in your case you have a f350 cab chassis which is waay more beefy than a f250 camper special. As far as cabs go. they probabaly just grabbed a cab form the line and stuck it onto yuor chassis. regardless of the trim package. You just happened to get a sport custom.

Re: Camper Special/Sport Custom Question
Most of the motorhomes i've seen had the sport custom pkg, probably because they cost slightly less than a ranger pkg and weren't as plain jane as a custom pkg (i.e - carpet instead of a rubber mat ,etc.)
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood, some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox, behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame, rear end, rear springs, and rear bumper...
