Fun installing the performance goodies (REALLY)

Post by Mancar1 »

The Edelbrock manifold and 600cfm Holly are on as well as the aluminum valve covers. Just had to slightly notch one of the fins on the drivers side vlv cover for a little extra clearance from the brake booster. Now the headers oolala. I have the Ford power steering box which has the large bulge in it. So the drivers side header was a no go. So I got a steering box off a 75 Dentside which is a Bendix box with no bulge. Sooooo got my fingers crossed and will update tomorrow. Anyone ran into this? Oh ya 68 Camper Special. (Sanderson shorty headers so sway bar not a issue.) Yes I already know long tubes give more HP, but as mentioned Camper Special. My 6th Ford truck over the years 5 old only 1 new, 7th truck if ya count the 67 Datsun I put the Mustang Hi Po 289 and running gear in. But I am still learning, will be until the day I cash in.
Hope I have all done so I can keep my Fri apt at the muffler shop for the 2.5" duals. Going to go with a good set of glasspacks.

You're going to run into problems installing that steering gear. The pitman arms, and steering columns are different between the two types of gears. Read through this thread about converting to power steering. It should explain a lot of the issues you might have. power steering conversion

As for the headers not fitting; try picking the motor up, installing the headers, and then dropping the motor back down.

Do you actually have the sway bar installed between the radius arms? I have a camper special too, and it seems that not every one got the sway bar.

Sounds like more work than at 1st thought. That is ok I am committed. I already have power Steering, but looks like pitman and shaft work. Or better yet raising the 390 for the install.
Thanks
