Factory Option or PO "Upgrade"

Post by Subzero »

Since buying my truck, I always wondered what this speaker looking box is mounted on the side of my kick panel. It doesnt appear to be making sound when the radio is on and I wonder whatever it is still works. It is located just under the dash. I need to take it off and see how bad my windshield gasket leak has hurt the metal underneath and I wonder what I'll find. Do all bumpsides have this box? Is this a factory option of some sort or did a a previous owner possibly add this?
Thanks

Thanks for your replies. Its cool looking if you ask me. I might as well leave it being as there has got to be 5 holes in there now too. I find it strange that there is only 1 speaker on only the passenger side and I also don't have a CB, though I do want one but the antenna wouldn't work out well with my car cover  . I don't think there is any writing on it but I will be sure and check tomorrow. That box has got to have some age on it too, doesn't look newish at all. Is it possible I could get it working and use it as a radio speaker?

Looks like a plain old school aftermarket add on speaker. You will probably find the old paper speaker cone has disintegrated by now.

I was able to take the speaker off and look at everything. Good new is there is no rust underneath and the speaker isn't rotted out, actually looks as though it could work. The speaker is actually mounted upside down and says "RS" on the top ( brand I'm guessing). Inside there is a "made in Taiwan" and 10 ohms marking on the back of the actual speaker. There are 2 wires going up to the dash and follow along under the glove box.

I believe the RS means "Radio Shack". I've seen them around back in the day. If I remember correctly they were marketed as a CB speaker.

Later on I might just get a "mock" CB and mount it to go along with the speaker. It would be even better if I coul find an older 80s or older one too. I couldn't have the antenna on the truck so is only be able to hook up the unit. My wiring under the dash is a giant mess but that's another days project  .
