Tough decisions to make...

Post by chad67 »

I got my health insurance information from work today. I don't currently carry health insurance as we pay out of pocket for any office visits or hospital visits. That averages around $1,000 per year. The cheapest plan would cost me around $4000 per year, but has a $1,500 deductible per year, meaning I would rarely get any benefit. The other plan has a lower deductible, but my portion would be $6,600 per year or about 6 1/2 times what I currently pay out of pocket. Please don't turn this post into a hate-fest, I just hope nobody else is going to have to make the choices I am. This is going to be huge hit for a family whose total income is under $30,000.

Since you're paying around $1000/yr out of pocket anyway now, go with the lower premium and save as much as you can. Try to get the deductible saved as quickly as possible and sock it away. You could always go with an even higher deductible and lower your premium even more. Insurance only benefits you if you have to use it so don't pay any more than you have to but cover yourself for a potential catastrophic medical condition. I pay over $320/mo now for family coverage and I've actually pulled out my insurance card once in 10 years and that was when I broke my toe two weeks ago. My daughter's like me and never goes to the doctor but my wife goes several times a year. Seems like even with insurance she always owes some doctor's office somewhere for something. The other option is to just pay the fine next year and forget insurance. I think it's supposed to be 1% of your taxable income or $100/$10,000 income. So at $30K/yr it'd be $300 and that would be when you file your taxes for http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... w=previous and would probably just be deducted from your refund if you get one.

Yeah, I'm around $3500 a year for a family of 4 currently and not using it that much vs. the bills that I keep getting from the Dr's offices.

I'm in the same boat, feel like dumping it. We haven't gotten our Obama premiums yet either.

The only good about it is I'm carrying my 24 year old daughter under the new regulations and she was covered when she had my wonderful granddaughter. If it wasn't for her and my Dr. addicted wife I'd have an HSA or Flex plan at a fraction of the cost. I'm fortunate that my employer has a good group coverage plan but even that's coming into question now.

I'd already been contemplating just paying the penalty and not get the insurance. I wonder what the government plans to do with all the fine money they collect?

and i thought our version of socialist medicine was screwed up. im certianly no expert, but seems to me your gov should just $hit, or get off the pot. either turn the whole medical system into a social welfare program, or stay out of it completely

Mr Chad , I agree with Mr Sargent.
It would be awful bad to come down sick and not have insurance.
I have seen it happen , not a pretty sight .

You will see that I mean when you read my "Blonde pet duck joke" that I posted else where on here. :D

Good luck with your decision.

Might read up on the Subsidies that the "Act" insures we will get to assist in paying the premiums. Of course, it's in the form of a "tax credit" which does little good until you file your Federal Income Tax but, according to what I've read, it helps on the back end.

I don't think I can take the weekly hit to wait until tax time. After the insurance would come out, my take home minus my weekly fuel would leave me with $85 per week, not good for a family of 4.

My wife and I pay just over $7K a year now, and we were told to expect a 42% increase.

Really?

Not affordable when Obama let the insurance companies dictate the entire terms of Obamacare. :D

I went online trying to get info on inc. (yes, i got threw web site pretty good). Looks like to me being single and 57 years old there is no "affordable" inc.available for me. It is going to cost me $450.00 a month. I don't know what they thinking in that White house but if they think i can afford it now i would had it a long time ago. The price's that were offered were around $70 cheaper than regular price. Example: $520.00 before Obamacare, $450.00 after Obamacare.

The only affordable was for those who could not afford it before. Sadly they'll still just go to the emergency room for a cough and then not pay the bill.

Also basically if you have a job that offers insurance you are not eligible for any subsidy.
