Building a ramp truck

Post by FordTruck »

I drug home a 68 F350 motorhome this weekend and I'm thinking about making a ramp truck out of it. Has anyone ever built one or could give me some input. Its got about 14' long frame I was kinda thinking 14' of flat with a 4' dovetail. I've got some 3" channel laying around I was thinking about using to make the frame would that be strong enough? Any help/input would be greatly appreciated

That camper is relatively lightweight. It's aliminum and lots of air volume. Better off starting with a cab-over-engine rig (COE) ala:

Nah, no way! Those are perfect... there is a picture floating around of Mickey Thompson's truck back in the 60's with, i think, a mustang on the back of it. There are a bunch of pics on the 'bumps at work' thread of various car haulers from back in the day.

3" channel would probably do it, but you will have to have the structure built so the car doesn't go through the floor.

Personally I'd probably go with 2x2x1/4 square tube or even 3x3x1/4 and run at least 2 per wheel 'track' with a lot of supports coming down to a heavy channel frame. Its hard to talk about without actually drawing something up.

cool project though. you'll definitely know that there is a car on the back when you're driving... but if you drive careful and brake early the 1-ton chassis should be able to handle a car.

just watched a recent episode of 'roadkill' which if you haven't discovered it yet... this is what the internet was invented for...

its the 'land speed record camaro' and they are driving from LA to bonneville in a 1-ton chevy 4 door (whatever the crap they call their crew cab) ramp truck. Yet another example of 1 ton trucks handling the weight.. if you needed evidence.

I wanna go the other direction and make a COE F600 or whatever into a camper!

Thanks for the imput guys I hoping to get started on this thing soon. I'm hoping to get away with using 3inch channel to save a little money and weight. Here's a picture of what I'mgonna base this off of.
