Big trucks with a 300 six

Post by junkyardjeff »

Anybody out there familiar with the f450 and up trucks that are powered by the 300 six and what I am trying to find out is how the motor mounts are positioned on the motor,do they have the side mounts like the light duty trucks or is it a single mount up front with two on the bellhousing. I am seriously thinking about installing a 240 or 300 in my 37 Chevy p/u that has the single mount up front and two on the bellhousing so if the bigger trucks are like that I might be able to get one to bolt up with minimal modifications.

I found some in a junkyard today and they do have the front mount and two on the bellhousing.

I think the front mount is too bulky for the chassis I want to put it in,it also looked like the big FT bellhousing was used with a thin adapter plate so I do not think it will work. I am thinking a 54 to 56 truck 223 motor would work better since the front mount is more similar to the GM parts and the carb/exhaust are on the same side as the 235,now to find one that is good enough to clean up and drop in.

The 37 Chevvy pickup should have a 216 engine with low pressure dipper oiling in it, so a later chevvy 235 with full pressure oiling or a 270 GMC will be a noticeable improvement and still be stock appearing without the hassle of cross-breeding. Just something for your consideration. Some number of years ago, I installed a Ford 260 into a 53 chevvy pickup and found the frame was a bit narrower in the chevvy so had to do some mods to the exhaust to make things fit.

It has a 57 235 right now but the motor has a rattle in cylinder #2,I never had what you could call a god Chevy motor and tired of seeing them in Fords so I want to return the favor and put a Ford motor in my Chevy.

Over the years I have been guilty of doing more than my share of cross-breeding and have found that sometimes it works out well and sometimes not so well. I have done Ford into Chevvy, Chevvy into Ford, Ford into Studebaker and a few others that did not work well. You can utilize the tubular mount that bolts inside the frame rails and has perches to mount to the two engine side mounts and then a crossmember to mount the rear of the trans to put the Ford into the Chevvy. This is really about the best way to do what you are wanting to do rather than the two rear/one front mount. Search for "Speedway Motors.com" , they have most anything needed including the mounts I mentioned and they are very good to deal with. They will send free catalogs upon request from their website.

The 292 is the best of GMs straight sixes. I'd just run that if it was me.

All of the big three's big sixes are solid engines, Ford's 300, GM's 292, and Chrysler's 225.

Never had a Good Chevy motor including the 235 that is presently in the 37 so its getting Ford power eventually, now if I can come up with a running 50s Olds 303 or 324 then the plans change. I will take a Olds motor over a Chevy any day,had plenty of Olds motors that were good but no Chevys. I have a 250,000 mile 95 300 that is alot better motor then the less then 10,000 mile 235
