Top Speed of a 68' F100

Post by Subzero »

This is probably a well known thing around here, what kind of top speed can I achieve with a 68' F100 with a 360, auto trans, and 3.25 gear ratio? Not that I plan on speeding around in it or going racing but just for general knowledge  . I've never taken mine over 70 for fear of over-reving the engine. There is a red line starting at 70 mph mark but no tach in these trucks so I figured that line meant red-line for the rpms.
Thanks

Don't know about a 360 but I've had my 302 with 3 spd and 3.25's over 90 on the highway several times.

Had my 4x4 crewcab 460/c6 4.10 gears on 35's at 130mph a few times. That's how u beat the new junk on the road by running faster than their speed limiter! Yes eventually a torque converter incinerated in there, but easy fix.
My dads 69 2wd with 390/np435 and 4.10's hung in there till a little over 105 I think.

I'm glad to hear that the truck can exceed 70 as that is the speed limit on some interstates around me. What does the red line mean that starts at 70 mph mark till the max 100 mph mark then?

Then the max speed limit 70. Then when when it was 55 some vehicles had red at 55 and over. The red is just a warning/reminder to slow it down. Or ticket time  Now back to 70

Yeah I've had a few cars with the 55 in red to "remind" you of the speed limit. :D My truck doesn't have a tach and the speedo doesn't work, but I can feel when she's running out of steam. A lot of it depends on what rear end ratio you have and what not, as far as highway speeds and rpms are related.

I have the 4:10 Dana and I cruise at a comfortable 70. I am going to go to a higher gearing.

The top speed of a bump is not based on the truck. It is based on how big your balls are!

Ill admit, I have taken my truck to the redline. I have a hot 302 and a c4 tranny and my speedo stopped at 100, but according to my friend his read 100 and I kept moving away, guesstimated at 105-110.

Had mine up to 65 and it was not struggling. I've yet to stretch it legs but don't really want to.

wow!!!

I've been up in the 90s easily with my overdrive but as I dont have any sound deadening it feels like I'm in a Nascar truck, feels great!

Lol yeah it was spinning like a top and had to make sure I had plenty of real estate ahead of me. Was running a garmin GPS for a speedo. Had a 3in dual in single out flow master 70 series dumping b4 rear wheel and l&l headers, wasn't too bad cab is coated with hippo liner, firewall cover and thick insulated carpet.

Best cruising speed was between 65-75.

35 inch tires at 130... now that takes some balls. My ranger on 30's got pretty loose around 80 and started pogo-ing in the back.
