Insurance Issues

Post by 68FORDJBM »

Huston, we have a problem. I can't seem to find insurance for my truck now that I've sunk about 10K into it and it's 95% restored. Does anyone else have this problem? Does anyone know where I can find a pollicy that isn't a Classic Car ploicy but insures the truck for what it is worth? I don't drive the truck daily but want to drive it more than once a month.

The problem comes up when they ask to see the declaration page for my daily drivers. We have three daily drivers but we also have 2 kids who just got there DL making our household have a total of 4 licenced drivers. To the insurance company this means I will be driving the truck on a daily basis. They don't care that I ride my bike to work 75% of the time or that my kids share a car. It's driving me nuts, taking away a lot of my precious time because they won't take my money and insure my truck so now it is sitting in the garage uninsurred.

Help?

They usually have a min. miles driven a year. I think mine is 5000 a year or so. Doesn't matter if I only drive it 500 miles a year. AAA will give the full coverage, but they and I have to agree on the value. Back when our 4 kids started driving, oh wow the cost goes way up. That was way to many years ago. Now with them long gone out of the nest and my wife passing over 2 years back it is just me and the to vehicles, so my rates r a lot lower. (The rate went up about 9 $ a year when I took My late wife Vicki off, go figure.)
Good luck to you.

in the vin moto world i've heard really good things about some of the collector insurers. some guys whose bikes are marginally collectable go with the collector insurance because it is more geared towards enthusiasts who are more likely to take care of their bikes, and personally place a high value on them. the premium cost per dollar on some of those policies can be really good.

i would check with some of the collector insurers before ruling them out. i think there was one called southland or southwest or something like that i heard good things about.

I've talked with 3 different collector carriers and all have denied me insurance because i have 4 licenced drivers in the house on only 3 cars that are considered a DD. Therfore they consider the truck a DD even though I drive it at most 2X per week. I have an apoint met with State Farm this afternoon. Wish me luck!

I guess the obvious solution is to kick the kids out of the house and off the insurance. So what if they aren't 18 yet:)

I went with Haggarty (collectors) insurance for my Fairlane, but they wouldn't touch my truck because it wont be garaged (wont fit). When I had my 67 Firebird, I had it insured with State Farm with an agreed upon value of $30k. They are going to insure my truck the same way with an agreed upon value once I am done restoring it and send them photos. They were really good with me and didn't limit my driving of the Firebird, so I am sure the truck will be the same way. The rest of my vehicles (non-classics) are also with State Farm and I also pay by my mileage with those cars and I also report my mileage 3 times a year.

Got a stated amount policy estimate from State Farm for $350/mo! This was because of all the youthfull drivers who will never touch my truck. That is 2X as much as all 3 of my other cars including the youthfull drivers. I don't get it? One more strike against the kids!

I had a teenager in my house (only 1) at the time I registered my Firebird with State Farm and I signed an agreement that she would never drive the car. If she did, nothing was covered. Talk to the agent about that and see if they can do that for you. It doesn't seem right that they are going to nail you for that much if they will never drive it.

State Farm wouldn't accept a driver exclusion statement. Thankfully, AMI reinstated my policy with the exclusion of certain drivers. I feel like I dodged a bullet
