Got a new toy

Post by thejunkman »

So, I ended up getting another project today. 1973 Pontiac grand am. Currently has a 400 that runs good, but as part of the deal with my buddy, he's pulling the engine and tranny, I'm getting the rolling chassis. Wasn't in the market for this body style, but it's really solid and the deal was too good to pass up. I'm planning kind of a low budget, mad max style muscle car build. Barebones and street eating power. Not doing anything with the body for now.

Mad max style huh? Perhaps a switchable roots blower topped Cleveland engine?? Ok, ok, the blower was faked and to my knowledge there's no on/off switchable blowers.

Will be a cool project!

The car in Mad Max was a '73 (Australian) Ford XB GT Falcon coupe.

The Pontiac needs a railroad iron front bumper and an EMP cannon on-board. --slow vehicle in front of you? Or, worse, someone who can't keep a constant speed? No problem. Blast 'em with the EMP cannon to disable their car and simply ram them off the road.

very nice. i wish i could have held out in selling my 73 grand am last year. would have made you a perfect parts car. 400/400 black on black all power... let it go for half a c note to cover emergency moving expenses  .

get yourself a 400 shortblock and some 6x-h heads and some beefy rods and tri-ys and that car will scream.

Haha, I shouldn't even say mad max style. Immediately people think I want to make a Hollywood replica. I guess when I say that I mean a gritty, barebones shell of a car that is pure muscle. My original vision was a flat black, stripped interior, sheet metal dash (stock car like), with the windows removed and expanded metal welded in place. I was thinking tunnel ram with dual quadrajets, and an m22 tranny. The problem is that this car is too nice to destroy like that. The paint will actually buff out to be pretty nice. And I love the louvered windows, so I'll keep those. I'll probably refinish the rally 2 wheels and keep them, with larger rear tires, with raised white letters. The bumpers are nice too, so I won't make the tubular steel bumpers I had in mind. The interior is absolutely trashed, which is how I got it so cheap, so there's still room for creativity in there. All in all, it's going to be slow going, since the bump is still my main priority.
