Hey there! So in reading your post, I'm hoping that you might be able to answer my question. I am restoring a 1970 f100 2 wheel drive for my son. I want to convert it to power steering, do I need to change the steering column for this to work?

yes you need to. if you're not concerned about oem i would get the column of your choice with power steering and adapt a saginaw power steering unit like this one http://benchworksteering.com/Ford%20FE% ... %20Kit.htm

the only reason i still have the ford power steering unit in my truck is because this darn thing just keeps going and going like the energizer bunny. it's the last part on my truck that could possibly go bad under the hood besides my shortblock going kaputs because i've replaced everything else. my grandfather said it had never been replaced and the truck has amost 300k miles on the body...

so you could get the 3 on the tree column or you could get a manual in the floor column like i just got or a automatic column but the key feature that you should look for is steering column with power steering. anything from a 67-72 should be a direct bolt in i believe. also people are adapting other columns from later truck 73 and forward. careful with the box body columns from 80 forward i believe because they have ignition on the column and then you are looking at more modifications. when you do your conversion, if you put a oem column in there, i would upgrade the ragjoint to a ingalls engineering steering coupler aka polyurethane ragjoint. you can then fortify it with a bar going across with a hole drilled on each side to bolt it in place. it will be night and day vs the traditional ragjoint. i did that upgrade on my 3 in the column and will never use a ragjoint again. theres all kinds of ways to go about adding power steering

my column just arrived in the mail today. i open the box and what do i find to my surprise? a old school tach on the column and a 3 spoke steering wheel in better condition than the one i have in my parts shelf that i was going to use. shazam!!! this thing needs a total rebuild though. a total rewire. time to get to work
