Old Tires

Post by radioactivelarry »

Here is proof that tires on a truck that sat for 10+ years are not good. The Pirelli Scorpion tires looked excellent with no checks or cracks, lots of tread and held air. The tires were on the list to change after I got it running good enough for street driving. After making it run good and just a few short jaunts for a couple of miles at a time and a short jaunt on the freeway at no more than 60 for a test drive. So yesterday morning we replaced the tranny mount and for a test I drove it to my Dr's office less than a mile from my house for my flu shot and when I pulled into the parking space I heard a hiss and it was the left front going flat. I put it in reverse and backed up a couple of feet and realized the tire had disintegrated, literally and came off the rim. I was hoping I could get more than 30 miles out of the tires while I search for a deal on some tires and period mags, now I wouldn't even drive it to a tire shop unless it was really close to my house. It went back home on a flatbed wrecker. I have a stock spare that came with the truck but I think it is in the same condition as the other 4.

I guess that is one of the perils of fixing up an old truck that hasn't been driven in several years. Even if the tires look good on the outside doesn't mean they are good on the inside. I'm just glad I wasn't blasting down the freeway at 65+ when it blew, that could have been disastrous.

Larry,
You forgot to mention that this trip was the first time your wife rode with you in "the old truck". If it weren't for bad luck, guys like us wouldn't have any. How long before she agrees to ride in it again?

I told my wife "you're bad luck you owe me a tire!" that went over well. When she first got in I told her to hang onto the door so it won't rattle. "It won't fly open will it?" Just make sure you're seat belt is tight honey! LOL

She's better now, I took her to the kitty store and bought Huey, Dewy and Louie some Wild Blue grain free cougar food and a box of kitty litter! She even held the flash light for me while I tightened the lug nuts as I went around each one again just to be sure.

After I drive it around a couple of days and tell her what a nice ride it is she will take a cruise. She is really a 50's, 60's Gal and likes the old stuff too but her idea of a car even a classic is champagne taste on the beer budget and would rather cruise around in a big Lincoln although she likes the T-Bird because it is a cool car.

Hey Rich, she really likes the seat! Thanks again, that's a plus in by favor.

Tomorrow I'll post a picture of the blown up tire and the truck with the new rims.

PHOTOS OF BAD TIRE
Here is over 800.00 in tires that went to waste because they just sat in the driveway for 10+ years and hardened up and rotted.

Could you imagine rolling down the highway and one or more blew out?
