Steering wheel/column issue

Post by takehikes »

I took apart the steering column at the upper end to put in a new turn signal switch and harness. That went fine if frustrating.
While I was at it I put on a Moon steering wheel and the adapter kit. That too worked fine. I even have a horn now!

However now there is a gap between the adapter and the upper housing piece. BUT if I push on the steering wheel you can feel you are compressing the spring and the gap closes. Everything works and fits yet this is happening.

I thought maybe some others had run in to this. I'd like to get that gap closed to make the install look right.

Loosen the two bolts that hold the steering column to the underside of the dash and the clamp in the engine compartment that holds the column housing to the firewall bracket. With these loose you should be able to pull the column housing and shift collar up toward the steering wheel a little.

That could be it! I had loosened the bolts at the lower dash as I painted the cover for that area. I may have picked up slack at that point. I'll check it and thanks for the help.

Don't forget the firewall bracket clamp in the engine bay too!
