Rear drum brake issue

Post by Fo-Mo-Co »

I have my truck up in the air working on some stuff. I noticed that if I spin the rear wheels forward by hand the brakes start to drag to the point I can't turn the wheels. Spinning them the opposition direction they free up and I can spin them fine. Any idea what would cause this with drum brakes?

Most likely brake drum warpage. Over time drums get a lil out of round.

Sounds like very weak or broken return springs and the secondary (longest brake lining) shoe is catching on the drum. I would disassemble and check everything.

Are both wheels in the air when doing this? By design, the drums are more grabby in reverse. Remember, as you spin one wheel, the differential will spin the opposing wheel in the opposite direction if not on the ground. The opposite wheel may be locking up due to poor adjustment or wear.
