more rear end questions
I have a bunch of questions about the rear ends offered by Ford. How common were the the "locking" ones? How well do they perform? Is this something desirable for a street truck rebuild?
I would appreciate any input from those of you with experience with gearing know-how.

re: more rear end questions
Dana 60s came with Trac-Loc and Power-locs. The Power-loc is the better of them, but the Trac is easier to find. The Power-loc takes one clutch pack to rebuild it and the Trac-loc takes two packs. You can get either the stock smooth surface clutch packs or get the more agressive style abrasive clutch packs. D60 fullfloaters axles were built in F250 and heavier pick ups and the D60 semifloater were offered in the F100 and newer F150 pick ups.
I am not sure what 9 inchers came with.

Me neither, with a locker you will end up with more tire ware and less gas milage.NM5K wrote:I wouldn't consider it a "must have" for a street truck. MK
I put the aggresive clutch pack in my powerloc and lost one mile to the gallon and everytime I turn a corner my tires cherp. No regrets when I am up in the hills.

re: more rear end questions
What do you mean as a "Street Truck"?
Stop light to Stop light,Friday Night Street Truck or a worker?
Alot of the OEM Units where not that good for anything other than a Normal Driver as they didn't hold up well to "Hot Rodding" them.
They did come out with an Extra Heavy Duty (still an Ford OEM part) Units and they were much better than the Stick Units.
You have a wide open market to chose from. But if it was me I'd go:
Street Truck everyday driver-True Trac or Trac Loc.
If it's going to be something that your really going to play with and get on it hard then go with the Detroit Locker as they are the Strongest and will take Pounding..

re: more rear end questions
I have a piece of property in the country. Every time I tried to drive into the field, the one wheel drive spun and I had to retreat. I could use the extra traction.
I still haven't made my final decision, but am checking into it now that I've got the bare frame. I appreciate all the input and collective wisdom out there.

re: more rear end questions
In my 66 Mustang I had a Full Spool and it was Fun  but it was also a big pain in the rear both rears mine and the cars.
Not to mention that the Wife just about Killed us at the Pigeon Forge Rod Run 2 yrs ago.Partly my fault as it was the first time she drove it with the Spool..
I Sold it to my Best Firend about 2-3 months ago and he has already called (his Wife) and told me a few things about it....She was a little
as he just about took out a Mail Box and some kids going around a Sharp Corner.
He nailed the gas right in the middle of the corner !!!

I had the same problem last summer at field day in a big wet field. I wanted to drive my truck up a simple hill to the flat field, that wouldn't bother a VW on 2 cyl's normally, but it was so wet and mushy there was no way I could make it up the short grade without digging in my right wheel. Even using granny 1st with as little throttle as possible. And I *have* limited slip. But someone, I think Willowbilly, said the clutch disks might be shot.. I'm not sure which version I have...I have the dana 60 full float in the 68 f-250 with limited slip whichever type it uses... It must be about wore out as far as the clutches, as it didn't seem to do me much good at all. I've never had any chatter problems or anything..Maybe thats why...

It is basically a solid carrier that provides 100% power to both back wheels at the same time no matter if you are turning or going straight.
You don't want it. They are a pian in the butt unless you drag race or rock crawl.

re: more rear end questions
I have heard that snapping an axle under acceleration with a spool is a real experience.
In about 87 I put the limited slip in my F-250 D60 2wd. It made a huge difference in how I got around. Especially on winter streets. It mad all the difference in the world, like from hating the truck to just loving it. Yes it was just the clutch type but worked great with the stock 300 T-18. I take it out in the woods all the time and it is amazing where that old truck can go. I must say after maybe 80,000 miles it doesn't hook as good as it used to. I imagine the clutch pacs are getiing worn. For all out I would go with a torsen-gleason or maybe even an air locker.

Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.

re: more rear end questions
So far most of the post have been about Dana rear ends. More then likley you have a Ford 9" 28 Spline. If so for less then 200 bucks you can get a Lock Rite form jegs. http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ ... rmenbr=361
I was going to install one of these on my 66. But when I took the rear end apart I discovered it was a Ford 9" traction lock. I replaced the clutch pack. Then sold the Lock Rite to a friend with a 72 F100. Basically you ad it to your exisiting diffrental. He loves it and said it was not to bad to install. I had a nother buddy who bought a 9" rear end(pumkin, center piece) off of ebay for about 400 bucks, it had some type of locking set up in it.
