You could only (as an option) get a two spd axle from about F500 and up.

I have always wondered why this was not a bigger market. I mean think of the range you could have for a truck. It would be ideal for those of us who enjoy off-roading. To be able to keep a 3.73 or 3.52 on the street and then switch to a 4.56 or 5.18 gear on the trails. other than size and weight I realy dont see a major drawback. Would need the same setup in the front as well. I would think it could be done in a size comparible to a GM 14 bolt. OH well something for the big guys to ponder LOL.

Some of the older cars had something similar I have heard of but never seen. It was called a Columbia axle. Sort of a 2 speed I think. I'll see what I can find

Wow, that article on the Columbia is really cool. By the way the article was written, I'll bet it was from the 60s or 70s. That probably means that those parts were 35 years old and growing scarce when the article was written, and it's been another 35 years since then. I'd love to see one.

Yes it would be nice to git the rpms down on the freeway and if towing keep them up for power.

During my mis-spent youth (late 40s-early 50s) every junkyard still had a few of these laying about, although by then a lot had been melted down for the war. Worked on the same principle as the two speeds for the larger trucks. There was some extra unsprung weight and quite a large bulge on one side of the center section. Now, the best way to handle it is to add a two spd box to the tranny or just change out the tranny to one that has the gear you want.
