My project so far

Post by iamthewreckingcrew »

Hi guys,

I've got a 68 F-100 swb 2wd that I've owned for quite awhile now. I bought the truck in AZ when I lived in Tucson and it was my daily driver for about 2 years. When I got it back here to Iowa, it kind of just got parked for a couple of years. I've done a few things here and there to it, but lately I've been more motivated and financially able to do some work on it.

I did the front disc swap last fall and I love it. It is manual still, but stops very well. I've just recently started an engine swap. Gonna stuff a 460/c6 combo in it. Here are a few pictures, although they aren't very organized:

Let me know what y'all think. :D

Thanks. I love this damn truck. I've had a few offers to buy, but early this summer a couple of guys stopped by when I was out in the garage and asked what it would take for me to sell.

They tried to trade a whole fleet of stuff, but I wasn't really interested. Then one guy finally asked, "What would it take to buy it?"

I told him enough to pay off my house and all of my bills, then I MIGHT think about it. I just bought this house a year ago.

I saw them at the next cruise night and the guy told me to tell him when I'm ready to sell.

Not that I think my truck is Barret Jackson material, but I just ain't gonna put a price on it because I don't want to sell it. It doesn't owe me anything and I love the thing.

Thanks for checking out the pictures. I'll have more as I progress.

noticed the 460 had a front sump oil pan, are you keeping that in or changing to a rear sump pan? I'm doing pretty much the same thing you are except when I took the 460 out of my 68 I noticed that the PO had cut a hole in the crossmember to drain the oil. Just curious, seems your alot further ahead then I am..so looking for pointers  good luck!

The 460 in my 71 came out of a 97 E350 van so I have a mid sump pan. Yes, I get oil on the crossmember. No big deal. I just wipe it off afterwards. I also used the serpentine belts (two of them) and other parts from the van. Also, the oil dip stick is really long and come right up to the front of the motor. You don't have to lean over at all to reach it.

I'll keep the front sump for now if it will clear ok. It was that way in my 81 and it did make a mess, but I can deal with the cleanup as long as everything clears. I won't cut any holes in the crossmember for sure.

The PO made a nasty looking hole in mine..I think it was 4.5 inches by about 8 inches. :x :x :x I'm going to go with the rear sump cause I'm picking up a frame for mine thats been sandblasted and I wanna make it look pretty :D
Couldnt tell you if a front sump will clear with the proper mounts as when I got my truck they had welded two sets of fe stands together to make one set.basically butchered it all up. Glad I'm not the only one sticking a 460 in my bump.

Sounds like your PO was the same installer on my 81. The 81 was a 300 straight six with a standard trans originally. They yanked that and welded in some Frankensteined mounts BEHIND the 6 cyl mounts. My valve covers almost touched the firewall. Made it hell to find a decent air filter too. I'm gonna do it right on my 68.

I'm happy to say though, that whoever built the 460 and c6 did a good job. Can't wait to drop it into my 68.
