i live in the Netherlands and i have a 1971 Ford F100 2 wheeler with a 302 cdi engine and a three on the tree.
my ?? are:
- the manual shift lever located on the steering column is somewhat lose and sloppy and therefore shifting doesn't appear to be very straight and smooth.. is there a way to fix this and how ??
- when driving in second gear and slowing down the shift lever pops out of the gear, again is there a way to fix this and how ??
i'm looking at replacing the shift collar and the shift tube. might that help solving my problem
Sounds like you answered the Question your self. Not being a Smart A$$ but I dont know much about the 3 on the Tree but that is what I would think is wrong.
Sounds like things are worn-out and need to be rebuilt.
I bought a Hurst Indy Truck shifter- I think it was like 80 dollars. It works well enough, and is 20 times better than the old column shift that was on it.
i was afraid that it needed a rebuild... but i was hoping there was an easy way out.
and if the rebuild don't work i can always try to install a Hurst shifter, huh ?... but i'm telling you i realy like this steering column shifting !!
anyone out there who'd ever rebuid a 3 on thee tree ???
i bought a 1971 transmission on ebay and i'm trying to get it over from chicago to the Netherlands.. the plan is to rebuild it and replace the old one...
anybody knows if it still possible to get parts for these old manual 3 speed transmission ?? like these synchro rings !!! and where ??

You are going to pay international shipping on one of those?? You can't give away one of those trannys around here. They are everywhere for practicaly nothing. You might consider a toploader overtdrive from an early 80s pickup or van. They can be found for a $100-$200, not much big demand for them to drive the prices up. I am not sure but I think they would bolt right up, might have to shorten the driveshaft.
Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.
