Quitting

Post by RTG_RACING »

Smoking that is. I was a pack a day smoker for 15 years. My last pack has lasted over two days. I have 3 left and when they are gone I am done. It's so hard. I have quit drinking and smoking pot quite a few years ago and it was nothing like this. I am nervous all the time. I can't eat and all I want to do is sleep. I don't feel good at all. But I have a family with a couple young ones and would like to be around for them. i am wasting 160.00 a month on smoking. My plan is to use the money i save by quitting and buy a bass boat. Take the family fishing and camping on the weekends. We always wanted to but never could find the money for it. Any ex smokers out there with tips on making this easer lets hear them.

Im trying to quit dipping, so im in the same boat as you. I can go about three days without one & im ready to kill someone. I dip a can a day, & at $5.16 a can, it adds up QUICK.

Hope it works out for you

i think i could give it a better try if i had soemthign to do more often. that was construtive. and that i didnt need to stop and need help to finish. a third hand is what i always seem to need. maybe that is an excuse too. i dont know. but if my wife would also quit at the same tiem . i know it would be easier for me to quit. i just got done watching a movie. and i didnt have a cigarette through the whole movie. because they were in here by the computer. and i ws in the other room too lazy to get up and go get them. but my mind was on the movie so i didnt really think about them while i was watching the movie.

I quit 10-15 years ago. I just decided that the only way to succeed was to simply not, for ANY reason, stick one in my mouth again. It's the only way that it worked for me.
You say you're nervous all the time, can't eat, just wanna sleep, ect.; that's got to give you an idea of negatively they are affecting you. My dad smoked for 61 years and died of cancer in 2007.

RTG,

Quitting is one of the hardest things you will ever do. My only suggestion is to make sure your family understands how difficult it will be and they need to have patience. Make sure you have an "out" of frustrating situations, especially with your little ones. If you get really frustrated you don't want to take it out on them, nor have them see it.
If you can find something to take the place of a cigarette during a nicotine fit it will help. I suggest something to occupy your mouth, lollipops, gum, etc. I used to drink a glass or bottle of water when I had one. By doing this it will also help with not gaining weight. The last thing you want to do is eat when you have a nic fit.
Another thing to do is get some additional excersize. Any aerobic excersize will hurt your lungs to start, but it reminds you why you are quitting. This will also help with weight gain. I found that excersize helped with the sleeping problem. Keep the blood flowing and circulating, get oxygen to your muscles.
Not everyone is able to quit the first time, but each time you try, you get closer to quitting for good. Don't use this as an excuse to relapse, but understand that it is a possibility.

Good luck

You will get pages of replies on this subject.
First of all you are doing it RIGHT, in my opinion.... cutting it off slowly. If you plan to go cold turkey now, and it DOESNT work, at least DO NOT BUY any more packs. If you bum a few, at least keep trying to CUT IT DOWN, CUT IT DOWN.
At some point you will be able to stop.

And you should know you will see after-effects for a few months, maybe six months. If it makes you fidget because youre nervous, just fidget for six months, eventually that will go away. Good luck on acheiving a big accomplishment.

Good luck to you. Like said you have to really want it to succeed. I quit drinking about 15 years ago for about 8 years then feel off the wagon on my head. Plus I dip. So I have two monkeys on my back and boy are they heavy. I wish you all the best in the world so when you are feeling good and over the worst of it maybe you can help me a little
