That is a cool Jeep. I've been fighting/working on a 90 Cherokee a while here and hope yours does you better.
I remember some of the Jeeps used several Fo9d parts like Carbs. and I seem to recall seeing Ford Solenoids on them also

Cutting fenders is very common, although if you want it to look pretty there are lots of "pocket flares" you can use to cover up the cuts. But they break easily on the trail, so why bother? Most jeeps have good ground clearance, and keeping the center of gravity low while giving good wheel travel is essential to wheeling in the west where there's lot of big rocks to climb over.
