Its just an old truck!!!

Post by green70 »

This was what i was greeted with as i walked out of the parts dept. of the local brand x dealership, along with a guy standing there scratching his head,i was very upset to say the least but the guy was very apologetic and i sort of calmed me down until he said those 5 words that would set any one of us off(its just an old truck),it took al restraint to keep from ripping his head off, plus there were far to many witnesses!after driving around all the next day i was finally able to find a body shop that would work on a car older than 1990 and the esTimate came back 1200.00,i am sure it will cost more to fix is brand new toyota truck that still had dealer plates, still might make him think twice about backing into another OLD TRUCK!!  :(

Only $1200? I didn't know they could get a real grill for it for that and still cover labor. Any damage to the fender?

That sucks! Keep shopping around. Try a place specializing in restoration or customs.

Is the guy going to pay for the damage? He's lucky there weren't more "old truck" owners around when he made both mistakes. I am just as anal about my old trucks as I am about our new vehicles. It is hard to find shops that will work on older vehicles.

I commend your self restraint. I don't know if I could have stayed out of trouble. I agree with Comet. Since his insurance is paying, and it's a classic, a restoration pro is the only way to go. The insurance company will try to get you to settle for much less than you can get. You'd sure have to pay for his Jap Crap if it was your fault!

That is irritating and really has a tendancy to miff you off. I inderstand. I had a '71 Ford pickmeup in pristine shape when I was much younger. My bro-in-law and I pulled into Wally World to get some fishing supplies and both got out top ut our poles in the front and I felt the ROCK hard and thought man what was that. Then I hear Shawn say something like Bud don't get too pissed but this guy right here just folded your door all the way up against the fender. Jesus I was screamin like a banshee. The guy tried to pull ofrward out of the parking spot instead of just backing up. He snagged the lower outter corner of my door with his back quarter panel while turning leftward. pushed the door all the way flat against the front fender and sprung the hinge "holder panel" all to heck. Insurance would not pay because it was an "older truck". I got $500.00 out of it and that was it. I took the money, kept that and sold the truck for $300.00 and didn't have another truck like it til this spring/summer when I got my '70 crewcab.

Bottom line is to make sure his insurance company pays. I was young and dumb and didn't fight it.

I forgot to mention that the fella that hit my truck died about a month later. I felt like a real shoe for getting so mad over a truck. The guy was only 37 and had a heart attack and died. He left several small children. Really made me feel like a horse's ass. I still feel bad for the kids when I think about it.

I must say i agree with fordman completely

Green70, you got to be careful about the cost of repairs cuz they may want to "total" your truck.

I think OldBlue67 went through something similar.

Just go to NADA.com, they value these trucks at over $5k as classics, I think your's qualifies.

Show them the Dennis Carpenter catalog and start writing your own estimate from there. :D Good luck Man this is a situation we all fear. I have and still do print everything I see selling that is similar to what I have in or like my truck. Like auctions for other crewcabs from ebay or any internet classiifeds. I really think it will help in a situation like this--oh and reciepts save those too. GO GET THEM SCUM-BUMS
