possom in the walls
i have a possom or maybe a pair of them in my wall and ceiling of my house. i just heard them get into a fight. i have been hoping it would leave so i could seal up the trap door under thohouse so it couldnt get back in. my other thought was to get my rifle out and start shooting holes in the ceiling. but then i would have to smell it all winter long. and probably more in the spring time. i am going to call the city animal control guy tomorrow and see if i can get a trap to put under the house to get him out of there. or both of them.
Re: possom in the walls
Here in Los Angeles, possums are protected cause they kill rats. But I can't stand the things and you NEED to protect your house.
My dog has killed one possum, one rat, two squirrels and a cat. My girlfriend's cat. I'd loan him to you, but you're too far away.
Possums are nocturnal. They like to cruise around at night. They are also scavengers, they will eat anything. Try leaving some scraps out away from the house. When you see them at the food, go block their entrance. Or better yet, turn your buddies dog loose when you see the possums at the scraps.
Warning: Possums can be very aggressive. They will defend themselves. Give them a wide berth.

Re: possom in the walls
i bet he is eating the cat food my wife is putting on the back porch. i have been telling her for atleast two years not to feed the cats outside. but she will not listen. our dalmation has tried to catch the thing but he get in the walls and the dog cant get the possom out of the walls. and really i don't knwo what animal it is up in there but i heard it growl so it has to be a possum. i just trapped one at my brother in laws a few weeks ago. it was easy. he growled but wouldn't move so i put abucket over him. drug the bucket to the edge of the porch where the lid was waiting to go under the bucket. then i took him abotu amile away and dropped him off.

Re: possom in the walls
I'd set a live trap with some smelly food, and see if they go for it.
They do usually prowl around at night. I've got a few around here.
Have big tree stump in the back yard. If I leave food particles on it,
they will come and get it. Almost nightly if I leave something out there.
I catch em with my trail cam..
http://home.comcast.net/~disk100/critters.wmv
http://home.comcast.net/~disk100/posvid1.wmv
Also have a few that visit me up at my OK place.. They like my
Bar-B-Q sauce.. That's what it's eating off the foil I laid out.
It eventually dragged the foil off into the trunk of the tree.
Then later, it took it off to who knows where...
http://home.comcast.net/~disk100/possum.wmv
Look at the little hands and fingers on those possums..
Almost human like in a way.. :/
BTW, unless you have seen them and verified, it's also
possible you might have a pair of raccoons. They like
to do pretty much the same thing.
I've never messed with any of the possums around here,
or up there.. They haven't bothered me yet, so I leave
em alone.
I had one go in the garage and get stuck in a blower
housing with a blower wheel in it. It was like a treadmill
and he couldn't get out.. Every time he'd tried to crawl
out, the wheel would turn and dump him back to the
bottom..
.. He was PO'd...
I dumped it over
and he got out and took off. They have a musky stinky
smell like ferrites. That's what clued me into him being
in the garage. I could smell him.

Yeah, we used to leave cat food out all night too. One night my wife started screaming. It doesn't take much to start her and she has no in-between. "It's hideous. It's scary. It's ugly. Make it go away. Oh God. Oh Please." Did I mention she has no "off switch"? She keeps repeating like a stuck record.
She agreed to bring the cat food in at night and to not put much out during the day.
That was several years ago. We found a dog a few months ago that later killed a possum. Have no idea if it was the same possum. But I haven't seen any possums around since and the squirrels have changed their chatter too. They used to sit up on the wires looking down at the dogs (all three) and make this chattering noise that sounded like laughter. "Ha ha you can't catch me." Well Bradly GT (that my new dog) has killed two squirrels and now I don't hear the others making that chattering laugh.

Yep, tractor supply has the box traps for around $40 for two. A fried chicken leg will catch about anything. You can also get some wire screen and nail one edge down so it's harder for them to get back in once they are out.
I'm not much on possums, dogs usually kill a couple little ones each spring and I shoot some bigger ones.

Hmm, I'll try a chicken leg for whatever is digging in my mulch (probably a possum or raccoon) it doesn't seem to have much interest in whatever is in the trap, only the mulch...Ranchero50 wrote:Yep, tractor supply has the box traps for around $40 for two. I'm about to ambush him with an AR15 - but I don't imagine the neighbors are going to be too happy about that...

Shooting holes in the ceiling doesn't sound like a great idea, although I admire the simplicity...

Well the good thing about the AR and holes in the ceiling is their really small and easy to patch up. As far as those possums fightin' up there, I'd pray their actually fighting and not...makin' more possums!

Fordman dont do what I did...
I had a possom problem too. Tried trappin them for about a week and nothing. So one night I came home after drinking all day and the possom's were tearing things up in the walls. Me in drunkin stuper thought it would be a good idea to spray a whole can of "Pepper Spray" through a pipe acess door into the walls. Thinkin what the hey it works on humans the possom wouldn't stand a chance. Wrong! It cleared out the whole house me, my girlfriend who was sleeping, and 2 dogs. Me and the dogs slept in the garage for two days and my girlfriend stayed with her parents untill I got the house aired / cleaned out.
Note: Pepper Spray sticks to everything and still works even if it isn't sprayed.
Then a buddy of mine came over and trapped out 3 of the them using a conibear trap baited with old hotdogs.
