F250 Camper Truck?
Hi, a neighbor of mine is selling a 1972 F250 Camper truck. It looks pretty original, in good shape - I've just never seen one before. Its a regular truck from the cab forward. Behind (and above) the cab is the camper- just like you'd expect on a van conversion. was this something that ford did as an option? or was it an aftermarket conversion? I'd like to learn more about it before I buy it. thanks.

Yes there are ford motor homes like that. I thought they where at least F-350's. Here is a pic off another site of a 68 I believe. Does this look like it? I wouldn't mind having one for camping. It would be kind of neat.

Re: F250 Camper Truck?
Is it just a Camper Special with a slide in type camper like this:

or was it like a pickup but without a bed and just a camper put in place of it? Kind of like this:

If it's like the picture up top then chances are a P.O. just bought a slide in camper after they bought the truck perhaps through the dealership or just an aftermarket type deal.
If it's like the lower picture then it's most likely an F-350 that was bought as a cab and chassis truck and got a camper installed rather than a flat-bed or dump-bed.
I'm sure someone that knows a bit more about C/S's and Campers on these truck probably has more definitive info.

Re: F250 Camper Truck?
They are good buys becuase usually they don't have a huge amount of miles and are well optioned.
My '70 F350 was a true camper, 10,000lb truck with power steering and factory disc brakes up front, originally had a 390 and still has the heavy duty cooling radiator and even has the rear shocks (rare in a F350). Campers also have an extra fuse block on the passenger kick panel. A side benefit is it's long wheelbase so a 12' flat bed fits great. Of course, the Yosemite National Park decal on the sideglass is cool too.

Oh yeah,

In order to post a picture you can either 1: Reply to a post and click on the "Upload Attachment" tab below the text box and right below the Save/Preview/Submit buttons when you're replying to a post and just upload a message directly from your computer. Or you can go to an image hosting site such as:http://www.photobucket.com/ and create an account. Once you create an account you can then upload the pictures on your compute to your new account on photobucket and once you upload them to your photobucket account and save them you can then go to the side of the image where it has a box to with a bunch of different URLs in it and click on the URL beside [IMG] code and copy it and paste it here in a post. Not sure that those directions were very clear?thefordguy wrote:very cool. I'm new to this, how do you post a pic? I have a pic of the camper truck.

Re: F250 Camper Truck?
Well, I went to see the F350. Its in pretty good shape - the engine and interior is completely original. says 65k miles, I'm pretty sure original paint. the only problem I see (besides finding a place to park it!) is there a couple of places on the camper that have some rust/rotting. The front overhang top edge has a little bit, and the top vent hole has a litle around its edge. Is this a big deal? It seams like it could be fixed, but I wanted to hear what you guys think.

I think I'll go camping with it! I guess if I ever get strapped for cash I could live in it and rent my house - just a backup plan.

Re: F250 Camper Truck?
What your neighbor has is called a "frame mount camper" and was probably done by an after market company. Not uncommon, but not as common as the slide-in camper. The bed was removed and the camper is bolted on permanently. Probably has a fresh water tank as well as a toilet and waste tank. I would expect there to be a propane tank and stove (range with oven). If you get lucky, there will be an extra 12v battery under the hood on the other fender and a 12v refrigerator. Sometimes the back of the cab is cut out so it's a "walk through", sometimes not.
I've never owned one, but I've seen many. It should be quite similar to the 34 foot sailboat I once owned. Except the truck won't float. ha ha
