anyone feel like there aren't enough hours in the day?

Post by harrysnyder »

I tell ya, lately I've just been so busy at work and home that it never seems like I stop running. I haven't watched TV in months. All my magazine subscriptions just gather dust, I never have any time to read them. I'm not complaining, its just crazy that I run myself to death. Right now at work we are busy as hell, and this is usually our slow period. We are moving the shop at night to a bigger building, hiring more employees and buying more equipment. Working from 7am to 9-10 at night each day. My after-work projects are ridiculous. Need to put the transmission back in my girlfriends 99 TJ. Just took on a major project restoring a 93 Cobra. My 71 is sitting stagnant, with the crown vic IFS and rear in one corner, the SWB frame in another. The bed at one shop, and the truck at my parents. Scott from this forum just sold me his 68 Highboy, and I bought a 79 dually High Pinion 60 front to swap in it. So I'm excited about that. Gonna make a lifted dually out of it with a flatbed. I think it'll be sweet. I have a tech seminar to prepare for in a couple of weeks and I've done nothing to prepare. I need more energy! anyone else out there running themselves to death? How are you keeping up with the pace?!

This is what 'Life' throws at you. When you're busy at work, you've got the money to do your projects, just no time. When work is slow, you've got the time, just no money. Sorry, there's No happy medium...

Best advice I can offer you is to prioritize your life, in writing. Keep this list in your pocket for a quick review and updating...DAILY.

Put off that which isn't critical for that which is. Learn to say NO to things that get in the way of your goals and stop you from living. Allow time for dreaming, THAT is what will give you the greatest joy. It's not necessarily 'doing' as much as it is 'dreaming' about what you want to do that will give you the greatest amount of pleasure and peace in your life.

The only way that works good for me is a list. I stick with what I start until it is done. Then I move on to the next thing. If I stray from my list I end up working on a dozen things a day and get very little done
I for one do not want more hours in a day... I get tired enough working during the ones we have

I have to do the same thing. If I try to do too many things or have too many irons in the fire, I will burn out and just walk away from all of it...nothing gets done. I have OCD pretty bad, so when things get out of order, I start to have a melt down. Most of the time, the OCD is a horrid curse, but if I try really hard to put a positive spin on it...It does help me very detail orientated.

I feel your pain, things where going slow than all of a sudden boom... 14 to 15 hour days, the kids after school activities, and than just trying to maintain the house that feels like it needs to keep falling apart. I had a list of things to do today, and as I got out of the Home Depot with my things the Florida weather lit up. So I thought it would be gone in 20 minutes like any other day. I sat inside and watched it lightning and thunder and poor sheets of water for four hours. So now I just got back in from putting new hinges on my gate, and fixing the wireless dog fence by the pond. My list of things to get done today had a lot more on it than that. And to make it all worse tomorrow is Monday lets start it all over again!

Well said, Larry. When I was younger I chased the almighty dollar. I worked a 50hr/wk salary job, then worked a 25hr/wk hourly job, sold insurance and did other odd jobs on the side. I made a LOT of money. Funny thing, after several years of it, I still didn't have any more money, just more stuff. About that time was when I had kids and a lot of things changed in my life. I traded money and stuff for spending time with my kids and watching them grow up. Priceless memories were made and priorities were rearranged. I devoted all my time off work to my kids and wouldn't trade any of it for any amount of money. Now that I'm older and my kids are grown, I can spend time doing things that I want to do. I still work a 50hr/wk management job but when I walk out that door I leave it there. I've dreamed of building a "hotrod" for many years and now, in my bump, I'm fulfilling those dreams. Do I have the money, no. I've planned and saved for 2-1/2 years to get as far as I have. I figure it'll take another 2 years to finish. A few dollars here, a few hours there. I squeeze in time when I can, in between church duties, honey do's, and grandkids. But every now and then I get to spend a couple of hours in the workshop or buy a part here and there. Advice? Work to live, don't live to work. Find time for the things you enjoy. Spend time with children every chance you get, they'll keep you young. Better yet, let them "help" you do the things you enjoy and they'll enjoy them too. Leave a legacy, not a bank account. Just my :2cents:

I thank God that I can work.
I like to work, fix, repair stuff.
I agree with Mr HarrySnyder & others, sometime there are not enough time in the day.
So I am very thankful to be able to work and have plenty of work to do.

Im in the same boat. So friggin busy at work that I feel like everything else is in a rush too. Im glad to be busy at work though. It might sound like being busy at work means my job is secure but Im only busy because they keep laying off the folks that were busier than I am and that all flows to me giving me more work so that if Im next it makes the next guy even busier yet. Seems in this climate the peanut butter is getting spread awfully thin on the bread and its impossible to keep up.

Yep life is crazy right now. I work 12 hour shifts with an odd rotating schedule. I do get a week off every month with a few days off here and there in between long breaks. That week is nice because I can get a lot done unless there is a cub scout function, sports event, church event, or one of the countless other things that comes up that I must do. My off days in between are just as bad. I keep a monthly schedule on my refrigerator so I can keep straight what I'm doing and when. I have to write stuff down so I won't get overbooked!
