Engine Mounts Ford 460

Post by tanderson6817 »

I've got a Ford 460 engine I rebuilt from the ground up and its all ready to go in, only problem is, Im not sure how the engine mounts are configured. I have what seems to be two different kind of engine mounts and it looks like somethings missing. So my question is, can someone maybe explain to me the components of the engine mounts of suggest a good diagram?

Good day TAnderson6817,

Another member will no doubt post a practical reply with the info you need to use OEM style mounts, yet I figured I'd speak up with my usual impractical information too:

Have you heard of the mounts made by Autofab? They're high-quality, USA-made mounts that are much stronger than the OEM style mounts, for hard-core off road or performance applications. I used them on my performance FE truck and really like them a lot.

These Autofab mounts are available for both 4x2 and 4x4 Bumpsides with the 429/460 engine. Here's the Autofab page:

Autofab Engine Mounts

Because of a bug on the page you may need to highlight all the text on the page before you'll be able to read it. But at the moment it says:

If you've got a 4x2 Bumpside than you'll want the FT 460 mounts, which are $260.

If you've got a 4x4 F250 Bumpside you'll want the FTX 460C mounts at $330. And a 4x4 F100 Bump takes the FTX 460D, also at $330.

Here are photos of my Autofab FE mounts, in case you're curious about them: FE and T18/C6 mounts from Autofab, plus frame alignment.

You should have 6 pieces for the stock 460 mounts, there are two block plates, two insulators and then two frame stands or "perches". I will also tell you that it is impossible that Autofab makes a stronger mount as RobRoy has suggested. The stock mounts are easily the most secure factory mount ever made and short of steel failure it is impossible for them to break due to the fact that they are a capture design and even if the rubber were to be completely removed it would still work! This is how they look when assembled:

Good evening Hawkrod and TAnderson6817,

Hawkrod, thanks for speaking up about that! I had no idea that factory 460 mounts were so tough.

TAnderson6817, sorry if my post misled you. This just reminds me that I should preface every one of my posts with an "I know nothing" disclaimer. :)

I have no idea why Ford made those particular mounts the way they did but they are unlike typical Ford mounts. I have alwaqys thought that it was odd. I have never checked into it but they may have plan to use the 370 industrial engines in F350's with compound trans and that could have been part of the design process. But that is pure stipulation. Fab your own. Mine run straight up off the CV crossmember. This allows for more room on each side for things like headers & steering shaft.
