my 69 ford issue and with shop

Post by sacramento_ford »

well, truck got my truck runnign finally.havent been here in 2 years but this highly repitable shop got it running but guy at counter says, that the passenger rear wheel doesnt rotate and is locked. ? what i dont understand is it was rolled in to shop via tow. and then we pushed it into the shop. said something that they have to remove the rear axel, some sort of seal has the wheel locked and can only be checked by removing the axel and its only spinning by the engine power. bad axel companant or is the service writer trying to make a few bucks. and is it true only one rear wheel can stop spinning? what does this have to do with the brakes? casue he wouldnt just replace the master cylander. do u think he means its not spinning freely? im confused.waaaaa!

Most likely if it hasn't moved in 2 yreas or so, it is the brake pads stuck against the drum. It will either break loose and turn fine, or breake the lining off a a shoe. Master cylinder wouldn't help. And yes, you can have just one wheel stick.

Your service writer may be looking to make the boss more money, but I have had brakes stick in as little as 6 months.

I go with the brakes sticking on one side. That happens.
Also the price of the master cylinder seems very high. I understand they need to make money on the part but off the top of my head when I changed mine earlier this year the part was only about $45-$50 at NAPA. Was that quote just for the part?

:yt: had my brakes stick after a month of being in the snow last year....if they took the drum off and it still didnt turn then you may have rear end issues

I'd find another shop... If you are confused you needed to ask the service writer for more details about what they are finding with your truck vs. just plop five lines of rambling text on the forum. Now I'm confused...

Your sentence structure is very confusing as well, using your phone?

Anyway, what's your truck, a F100 or F250/350? Sounds like a F250 with a Dana 60 if they want to remove the axle to see if it'll spin freely. The seals won't lock up the drum but rust scale between the shoe and drum will easily. Dana 60 drums can be a PITA to remove.

What does the master cylinder have to do with anything? Do you have other brake issues?

well everything came to 730.00 they put new rear brakes. a leaking wheel cylinder. and bled the system, and installed a silver plated master cylinder with platinum cap for 160.00\
its my fault i should have bought my own parts, but im too afraid of wasting the time, they would HAVE SAID the job took longer or messed with my truck, so i let it go . they do good work, so ill leave it at that.

Well the past is the past. Now go out and drive the truck and enjoy. The whole point of having it :woohoo:

I'll say it again and I mean no harm to anybody BUT people that own 40 plus year old trucks either need a lot of money to pay somebody to work on them or need to know how to fix them themselves.
$730 for that little bit of brake work is a complete rip off in my way of thinking. I hope they at least did good work.

:hmm:
'Cept we don't know exactly what was done to it.
In my neck of the woods anything 25 years or older is considered custom work and gets charged time and material.
So ASSuming they have 3 hours labor to get it running plus carburator kit plus points, condensor, spark plugs, cap and rotor and wires that is close to $400 there.
enter 3 more hours to remove frozen rusty drums and install axle seals new shoes new wheel cylinders new hardware new drums and while trying to bleed the system a brake hose blows up plus the master cylinder won't build up pressure and needs to be replaced. (punctuation not used on pourpose)
He got a GREAT deal in my way of thinking (auto technician that works on cars to pay the bills).
Without an itemized invoice we'd never Know.
WWHFD? what would Henry Ford do?
