Got a Free Jeep!

Post by TexasTruck72 »

I brought home a jeep that was given to me earlier this week. It is not just any jeep, it's a WWII Ford GPW Army Jeep!

Not much left, but I have some plans for it. The first plan was to keep this piece of history from being scrapped(which is where it was headed if I hadn't saved it). The University of Georgia was clearing out the woods behind an old Ag school barn and found the remains of this old jeep. I was over there helping out with a friend's project and asked the professor in charge of the facility about it. He said it was going to be scrapped along with everything else they'd pulled out of the woods(old tractor implements, etc). Told me I coudl have it if I could haul it off. A few days later, I come with the help of a friend and his trailer to haul it away. Took 4 guys to lift the thing onto to the trailer. And somehow me and one friend managed to get it off by ourselves and prop it up on stands at home. I'm going to do some history detective work on this old jeep before I sell it, etc. If only it still had most of its drivetrain, wheels, etc. :hmm:

As a big Ford and Jeep fan I have the best of both worlds in a 1958 CJ-5 with a Ford drive line. It has a 1967 302 motor and a C-4 automatic trans with a Kennedy Eng. adapter to the Jeep axles.Mine wasn't much more than your bucket when I started building 13 years ago. Good luck.

Very cool TT. Which barn was it behind? I worked at most all of them as an ag student there in the 90s. See you at the meet and greet.

Love them myself. I had an M38A1 with a Ford 289 and a Warn OD unit in it. Thing was scary fast and would climb anything. Sure wish I still had it. Good luck on the Jeep you found Greenhiboy
