What tire size do you recommend?

Post by SomersMerc »

I just orderd some new wheels for my 67 Merc M100 Ranger. 15X7 for the front and 15X8 for the rear. Now I need to know what tire size will look best on the wheels. I plan on buying BF Goodrich radial TA's. I was thinking 275 60R/15 for the rear and 245 60R/15 for the front. I do have power steering as well. The stance is original and not lowered. Any suggestion and photo's would help.

Thanks

If you don't already, knowing how to decipher the P-metric tire size and convert it to inches is a good thing to know.

Example 275/60-15

---275 means the overall width of the installed tire will be 275mm wide. 275mm = 10.8 inches
---60 means that the height of the tire is 60 percent of the width. So... 275mm x .60 = 165mm and 165mm = 6.5 inches
So... 6.5 + 6.5 + 15 = 28 inches high overall. Approximations of course, but close.

A 275/60-15 tire is approximately 28" by 9"

Thanks. That is good to know. I will make note of your email and put it in my file for my truck for reference!
I am also wondering what people think looks cool but is still nice to drive/steer.

Radial T/A Specs

7" is the minimum wheel width for a 245/60. I would try to avoid running a tire on the minimum recommended width because in my experience they wear strange and also it doesn't look good to me.

I would probably go with a 225/70 or even 235/70 if you want it to look fatter... :2cents:

Sounds good. I need to get a visual before I make a final decision. I might need to go to a tire shop and put some different sizes side by side to help with my decision. Of course the tire shops around here do not stock BF Goodrich Radial TA's
I tried to look up on the photo forums but was not to successful

I have 275/60's on 15x8's and 245/60's on 15x7's...I've dropped mine with DJM beams and flipped hangers too. I LOVE the look! 8)

BTW...I have Uniroyal Tigerpaws on mine and had them balanced on the inside only. I was all for the BFG's but these were a little less $$$ and fit my budget better at the time. FYI, I have power steering and a big block and it steers just fine and is a blast to drive. No complaints here.

Thanks a million for the kind words! They mean a lot as I've really busted my butt on this truck and I'm pretty proud of the work I've done! She's not perfect and also not done but it's where I want it for now until I do a 'real' rebuild.

Hey guys I really don't mind the posts of your builds. I really enjoy seeing all the great photos. It just makes me want to do even more to my project however I do not have the mechanical talent like you guys. Anyways I really think your truck is cool.
I have decided on the tires after talking more with my wheel supplier and going over different options and comparing heights, widths etc to what I currently have on the truck. I will be going with the same as in your photos.
245 60 15 on 7 inch for the front and 275 60 15 on 8 inch for the rear. I picked up the wheels yesterday. I will post photos when the tires arrive in 7-10 days and after I get them mounted.
Thanks again for all the great suggestions.
