1972 Ford F-250 auxiliary gas tank
New to the forum. I am contemplating buying a '72 F-250, but the auxiliary fuel tank, driver's side, has been removed. I want to know where I can buy a replacement tank (like the original) and about how much the cost would be. Thank you for the assist, JT>

I'd be interested in that source, too. I've been unable to find one myself. I've looked into these guys stuff for a potential modification fit http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/page/ ... /cat66.htm

Re: 1972 Ford F-250 auxiliary gas tank
I've seen several at PicknPull, but they poke a hole in all gas tanks before they put the vehicle in the yard. You can get all the pieces from them, but not the tank. BTW, did your truck come with a factory tank, or after market/dealer installed?

Re: 1972 Ford F-250 auxiliary gas tank
Kurt, from the pics I've received from the used car dealer it appears that it was a factory tank, but don't know for sure. The truck also has drum brakes and no A/C, but appears to be an otherwise decent vehicle. I want to see what my after purchase cost would be for adding the tank, disc brakes, and A/C. I'm at about $2,000 for the brakes and A/C, but think I could get some of the brake work done for less than $1,000, thereby reducing my net cost. Found a tank from a vendor on the internet, but he wanted $750 for a new metal tank, hence my desire to see if I can find a used one. I know the best thing to do is keep looking for a truck that actually has all that I want and not have to add anything after purchase - they are difficult to find. Thanks for the input.

Re: 1972 Ford F-250 auxiliary gas tank
If your talking about a regular cab 250 with the factory aux. tank mounted under the bed on the left side this one should work:

If it's a crew cab then it could have been equipped with a slightly different tank. Ask me and CalfDemon how we know.

Re: 1972 Ford F-250 auxiliary gas tank
I've got one if anyone is interested. It's out of a '69, so you'd need a filler neck to fit the lower location on the '72 bed. It also needs a new sending unit, and is plenty dirty. Includes the skid plate and straps. It's yours for the shipping cost.

Re: 1972 Ford F-250 auxiliary gas tank
Just an FYI, I bought an LMC tank which was listed for my 69. It had reversed filler and vent pipes which could have been overcome but I like things correct so I sent it back. I found a new OEM tank at Greens. It cost me over 300.00 but it is new and it's Ford. The filler hose for the "above belt line" location is not available anywhere. I ended up extending my metal filler pipe with some exhaust tubing and then using the hose for a 73 and up truck. This auxiliary fuel tank restoration has taken more time, money and effort than rebuilding the engine has....almost.

Re: 1972 Ford F-250 auxiliary gas tank
I have a '70 F250 CS w/28 gal aux tank. Installing a GV overdrive, had to remove the skid plate, and need to have the front inside of the tank modified so its flat, not bulging out at the bottom. Sure woukd like to find a new tank!

Has anyone ever ran across a 72 F250 with 3 gas tanks?

Sure have, I have a couple.Nathanieldean wrote:Has anyone ever ran across a 72 F250 with 3 gas tanks?
the 4x4s didnt get the aux tank option from Ford. but there were aftermarket tanks avail for the 4x4 application. in 2wd Ford offered one aux fuel tank. So if you have a 4x4 with aux tanks or a 2wd with two aux tanks some of those tanks are aftermarket and not Ford.

Re: 1972 Ford F-250 auxiliary gas tank
I have a 1970 f250 SC Camp. Spec. and I took the in cab tank out and replaced the aux tank with one from LMC and it went in with no problems. Now of course the sending unit I got from them did not work but you cant win them all I guess.
