Don't cut everything just for the heck of it, only cut out the bad stuff. The rusty stuff in your pictures looks like it's completely flat. Get some 20 gauge steel and patch it in.

Re: 71 F250 Work Horse “The Beginning”
Hey everyone, little update.
First off a big thanks to Dustin (AverageF250) for going out of his way last Friday to come look at a truck to tell me what he thought of the engine. A great guy!
Alright so here is the run down…I'll do mainly pictures since that is more interesting.
Still have a little welding left to do on the driver side and then a little panel to cut out on the passenger. But just haven’t had a whole lot of time.
And I guess I am set on my engine and conversion choices now. Found this looked at it and then Dustin was nice enough to come look at it and tell me that he thought the engine was good. The wife told me I could only get it if it was an ice cream truck…so “yes dear it sold ice cream….once.”
It is a 4bt (91) with a chevy bellhousing. Not exactly certain on what I am going to do transmission wise however it will be a manual. I am open for suggestions.
Anyway, i am off for the night.

Re: 71 F250 Work Horse “The Beginning”
I was expecting a call later that day asking if I wanted to grab a beer, if I did to bring a chain and some tools and head East for a few hours.
Nice work!
This caught my eye:

Sounds like a good price to me, but I'd want to see pics to make sure the bores the dowel pins fit into aren't messed up.

Haha, my mother followed me with my Dodge and a chain. Luckely for her it turned out it would travel at 62mph, and i traveled the 360 miles without issue...except for my re-end being a little sore by the time i got there.
Once again Dustin thanks alot.

This is great Rob, that's a nice truck and I can't wait to see the 4BT transplant!
The floor patch looks like it was very simple, any other rot on the truck that needs attention?

Re: 71 F250 Work Horse “The Beginning”
Alright everyone, sorry for the delay...just been moving slow on the entire thing. It will mainly be pictures with some interspersed comments.
Oh here one of the reasons for the delay...spent some time down on the Cache Creek Fire just a little ways away from where i live.
Pulled the motor and tranny at a buddies shop...maybe i should invest in a cherry picker.
So the engine is in the Ford now....Just not in the right place yet.
This was after one can of engine degreaser.
I decided that i needed another rolling dolly for it....which involved going two towns away to find the ?casters? (the wheels) to complete it.
I had help....well all they did was watch me...so helpful.
Here we go Clean-ish engine.
And its resting place until we're ready to proceed.
So once again, Average250 is coming to the rescue, and thus sometime in the next week i will have an adapter plate, and motor mounts that he is building for me and he has a friend with a ZF5. So getting close to being ready to start the transplant.
Oh the yellow car in the background is a 56... don't hold me to it.... Lincoln Premier....Yes it does drive and its a boat, father drove it around last weekend for the day.
Anyway, till next time

Re: 71 F250 Work Horse “Going Under the Knife”
Well guys, sorry about the long delay. Its been an interesting few months. I finally might have the time to do the first portion of the project.....
I loaded the truck onto a trailer this morning and drug it into town, offloading it at a buddies shop. Monday it will get moved into a back bay and will start getting its new heart transplant.
4BT (VE Pump) connected to a ZF5 (adapter plate provided by Average F250) mated to a 205. AverageF250 also made my engine mounts.
The current plan is to get the new engine/transmission/transfercase in and then come back and add a HP, Disk Dana 44, and power steering and brakes. So it will only be a two wheel drive truck the first time it roles out under its new heart. Unless i get the other parts collected up.
Sorry no Pictures....but pictures to come.

Re: 71 F250 Work Horse “Heart Transplant”
Well, after cleaning out the bay it was going into, we got it in this evening and ended up getting the front sheet metal out and will start pulling the engine tomorrow. Sorry no pictures will hopefully have a real update tomorrow.
Ok....couple questions, you can refer me to other threads no real answers necessary. I will be doing some reading over the next few hours.
Front axle options and power steering options. I would like disk brakes.
My original plan was to find a hp disk dana 44 off a 77.5 to 79 Ford however are there any other option that i am not thinking off. My mechanic "buddy" looked at it and said what about a Chev (dont know year) axle and power steering box....however that is also without measuring... and that was an off the cough thought, when we were standing there BS'ing once the front was off.
Thanks
Rob

Re: 71 F250 Work Horse “Heart Transplant”
So front clip came off last night and today the engine, and transmission came out today.
So the old 390 and 4 speed is in my pickup needing to be offloaded in the morning and the Cummins and new 5 speed loaded, so that they can go in to the shop.
If anyone needs a pretty strong 390 or any other driveline type components let me know...I travel to Portland from E. OR pretty regularly.
Still looking for help on the front axle if anyone has any thoughts.

Sorry no pictures....but everything is out and the engine went in this evening to see what it looked like. Tomorrow we are going to mate the engine and tranny and shoe horn it in to see where it all fits for measurements.

Re: 71 F250 Work Horse “Heart Transplant”
So got a little more done today.
Engine and transmission linked together and whole set up went in.
After some moving and jostling we got it placed where we wanted it and started building the motor mounts.
So tomorrow the engine and trans comes out and mounts go in. The transmission crossmember will probably be removed tomorrow and we know that we will notch the front crosmember just a little to ease servicing.
Anyway.....we'll see what happens tomorrow.
