Re: 71 F250 Work Horse “Heart Transplant”
Sorry no pictures....i know its not a good project unless it has pictures.
Well in between folks coming into my buddies shop, we managed to get the transmission crossmember out, notched the front crossmember a little, finish up welding the motor mounts together. Then we mounted the motor mounts onto the engine and slid it in place and drilled the bolt wholes. So the entire engine and transmission is sitting in the truck on its mounts with a jack holding the transmission in place.
Looks pretty good...almost like it was suppose to be in there to start with.

Re: 71 F250 Work Horse “4BT Cummins Heart Transplant”
So no work on it got done this weekend. My body who owns his own mechanics shop, and i have been working on it while he has been slow, (crops are in and hunting is about over so no one is tearing up trucks these days) and thus he didnt really want to work on during the weekend. So instead i spent the weekend cutting wood and reloading.
But i do believe i have a line on two 78 Fords that i may pick up for the axles and steering boxes. There're ranch trucks and thus have flatbeds so maybe i might flatbed it too....I don't know yet.
anyway here is a link to my dumb brain fart question about weather or not they would be a direct bolt in. http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... 01#p629901

Sorry no new pictures
Progress report.
--Engine in
--Transmission in and resting on cross member that will be bolted in once transfercase goes in.
--clutch system built and in
--Fuel lines, including return line done.
Worked on installing hydro boost today, going to have to make a bracket to install the unit out of the van.
Questions....
Anyone know how to install a tac on one of these 4bt (VE pump)
Near term future plans
--hopefully going to pick up a 78-79 truck in the near future and steal the front axle and power steering unit off of it.

When did you change your name to Rob?
You may be able to use a Dakota Digital alternator tach adapter to use your alternator to generate a signal a standard V8 tach can use. It depends on the alternator you have. The other option is to use some form of tone wheel on the front of the crankshaft with a sensor and a Dakota Digital flywheel tooth converter to get the same signal.

Average,
Rob is a hold over from the Army, everyone is known by last names which then get shorten. I normally go by my first name however in public/ forum settings i use Rob as a little protection....aninimity. Its nothing personal to all of you regulars its more the guy who comes on and is fishing for personal information that i am worried about. I know it wouldn't be hard to get my real name and what not for someone serious but its a little speed bump.
Ok i am googling your tach idea, thanks average.

Re: 71 F250 Work Horse “4BT Cummins Heart Transplant”
So a little progress but sorry no pictures....I know, i know i'm fired.
-So today we built the bracket for the power brakes, however do to lack of correct bolts it was not installed.
-Additionally we fabbed a Frankin Exhaust out of the components from the vans exhaust and the original exhaust. So not the prettiest but cheap. Will hopefully be installed tomorrow. Its 3 inch.
Tomorrow i will most likely pick up a 78/79 Dana 44, the steering linkage and steering box, for $400. Not real cheap but local. The others i had found were a long ways off. I would have thought it would have been easy to find one with all the old farm rigs running around here however with scrap prices they all seemed to have gone the way of the Dodo.
So hopefully tomorrow, the exhaust will go in, the hydro brake system will be installed, and the new axle swap started.
Rob
P.s I will try to get pictures. I am charging my camera now.

Re: 71 F250 Work Horse “4BT Cummins Heart Transplant”
Ok Finally some pictures.
Hp Dana 44 after getting scraped and a fast power wash....something about cold water and temps around freezing just arn't fun.
Old axle on the way out
Couple engine bay shots
New power brake unit
New axle underneath.
Also i finished up the exhaust today. Have a little work left to get the power brake unit fully installed.
Ok question time.
-I have a 78/79 power steering unit. How has everyone installed those? Any pictures?
-Ah i think thats it for now.

You know i was about to say yeah i have read that and it doesn't apply because i am using a 4 Bolt 78/79 box....but then i thought better of it and went back and re-read it. Yeah it most defiantly does help. You know there is this magical thing called google and a google search for pictures brought me back to this...via two other links. http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... =5&t=55100

Re: 71 F250 Work Horse “4BT Cummins Heart Transplant”
Did not make a whole lot of progress today.
Exhaust fully installed last clamp and all bolts tightened up.
Shock towers moved and new shocks installed.
Yeap not a whole lot.
However i do have a question on Long term results on interior sound deadening in the interior section, hopefully it will bring some good information.
http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... =6&t=70267
Also here is another question on power steering pump requirements and pressure specs?

Re: 71 F250 Work Horse “4BT Cummins Heart Transplant”
Well, i got orders from the War Department aka MrsKRob, they said get your rear end back to Germany. So I'm sitting in Germany with my wife...who is at work right now. Long Story short, i was in the Army and stationed in Germany, when i got my orders releasing me from active duty my wife's job, made her an offer she couldn't refuse to stay in Germany. So I've been a trophy husband since i got out of the Army, however i start work when i get back.
However before i left for Germany i found a heavy front winch bumper, with winch (questionable on functioning) for $200 on a dent side, that i will be picking up when i get back. By the way if you are in the Portland Oregon area, there is a guy by the name of Tony Ford (business name), he is a wrecking yard and has lots of bumps and dents. I plan on wire wheeling it and then repainting it. Its a warn winch so hopefully i will be able to find a control remote for it and get it working. I know im a little ahead of myself with finding a bumper when the truck isn't even close to running yet.
I have also been contemplating the idea of going to hmmwv tires (37s) however i am curious about how much lift would be necessary to clear them. I don't want to lift the truck too much because its a work truck. I am also confused on weather you can use regular 16.5 or if you have to get special 16.5 with bead locks to keep the tires on.
Anyway, sorry no new pictures i'm pretty bummed too about that.

Re: 71 F250 Work Horse “4BT Cummins Heart Transplant”
Some pictures, and a quick update.
New power steering box is fabbed and in, still need to weld the plate in but the hard part is over.
Started working on the transmission cross member a few days back...sorry no pictures.
Picked this up a couple days back in Portland, from a scrapper (he has lots of Old Fords) Tony Ford off of Sandy. Anyway picked it up for $200 haven't checked to see if the winch works yet. But today i anything that can come off, off and started wire wheeling it. It will get a coat of primer and then Rustolium flat black.
Anyway we'll see what happens in the next few days. By the way a buddy named her for me, FrankinFord. I find it rather humorous.

Re: 71 F250 Work Horse “4BT Cummins Heart Transplant”
I used a original tach from a mid-90's Ford CF (cab forward) medium duty truck. It is electronic and has a magnetic pickup running off the flywheel ring gear teeth. Drilled & tapped my Dodge bellhousing/adapter plate for 3/4-16 thread and installed the mag pickup. Reset the switches in the back of the tach (its programmable) for the number of teeth on the Dodge flexplate and now I have working tach.KRob wrote:Anyone know how to install a tac on one of these 4bt (VE pump)
An other option I know of is to use a mechanical tach. There is a drive kit that goes where the plug is in your timing case cover - right in front of the injection pump. I decided against that option since it is kind of rare (expensive). Attached is a pic I found of one from an industrial (construction equipment?) application:
