'67 step side from the weeds

Post by fonfixer »

 Ok, wife said I had to wait until income tax comes in NEXT YEAR before we could build a shop. I couldn't wait, got out at the end of the driveway and wanted to pull the engine so I could get started on that. I'll give up my spot in the garage for work space until a shop is built. One thing lead to another and before long I had the grill and top valence off. Next weekend, as long as I keep up with the honey-do's, I'll get the number, bottom valence, and radiator support, maybe the engine/tranny to. I did have help, couldn't have done it alone.

Nothing to update, life getting in the way again. If it doesn't get to hot this afternoon I was going to pull the engine and transmission.

Ok, the weather and the wife cooperated today. Still don't have a shop and doing this at the end of the driveway with the hopes the wife will get tired of my "mess" out there and be 100% for building a shop. I pulled the head and found gecko eggs in the number 4 cylinder. Drained a gallon of water from the oil pan. The last three lifters were falling apart with rust. Removed the timing cover, attempted to remove the cam gear on to find it was the original composite fiber material! Too cool. Had to bust the gear teeth off just to turn the cam and move the lifters, but got all of the lifters out, even the last three that were all rusted like Superman's hide a way in the Arctic! Dropped the oil pan, it has an inch of sludge in the bottom. Got number one piston out, the rest are soaking with kerosene on the bottoms to free them up. A coworker has a connection to get the cylinders bored. Coming back with new crank, cam, connecting rods, pistons, rings, bearings, oil pump. Hopefully by years end I can hear this engine come back to life. And also the tranny seems to be fine. It had a protective coating of grime, but it still runs through the gears. I'll replace the front and rear seal in it just because its out.

Wow, it's been awhile since I've posted!! Good news, I now have a shop to work in! Coworker had a shop built for $14k, I built the same thing $6700. I now have a 24x30 with 12 foot walls. I got two sets of warehouse shelves from work, work bench made out of 4x4 oak post and 3/4" plywood, electrician friend help me do the wiring. When I bought the sheet metal the girl screwed up and sold twice as much wall panels then what I needed. I could've done it for less if I had caught that mistake, but on the other hand I have material to make flat roof off the front and down one side where I park the camper.

Everything is starting to come together. Tomorrow I start on the step side, I'll post pics.

Made some progress today after work/dinner/honey do's. Got the bed removed, had to use angle grinder with cut off wheel. Couple minutes later I realized what was left of the wood in the bed was smoldering.

Next the cab gets gutted and everything stored in shop and cab comes off. Hopefully start sandblasting the frame this weekend.

Just came from the shop, think I've made up my mind to find a replacement cab. Some had questioned if it would still be the same truck. Well for me it would because I just bought the truck fairly recently and it would be like changing any other part that has become defective. But I understand where they're coming from especially if its a truck they've had for awhile. I was told the truck will never run again and that is the best motivation I can get, DON'T TELL ME WHAT I CANT DO! I'll continue on with the frame, bed, and parts I do have while searching for a cab within my price range.

Someone told you it would never run again? Psssh. Have they never heard of a frame off resto?? And sure it won't be ORIGINAL, but as long as that doesn't matter to you, why would it matter to them? As long as you keep the driver door, or swap the VIN plate to a new door, it's the same truck.

People

Think I may have found a replacement cab for my project. Found a '71 in a junkyard with a solid cab, only small bit of rust on lower rear cab. After looking over the section of this site that list all the difference between the years, it seems the dash would be my biggest obstacle. I really wouldn't want a '71 dash in my '67 step side, just wouldn't look right. The way the fuel tank mounts and the location of the upper bolt for shoulder belt might be different. Best of all I talked in down from $400 to $200 with me doing all the work to strip the cab down. Now I just have to convince Mama to let go of $200.

Got a replacement cab today for my project truck. $200 and five hours in a local junkyard to strip it bare and I have an almost rock solid '71 cab sitting on my trailer out in the driveway.
IMG_0590.JPG
After I got it home, I was able to compare a '67 and '71 side by side and found a few more differences that aren't list in the technical section of the website here.
The plate that covers the front cab mount bolt has four screws on the '67, only one on the '71. Three large holes in the firewall on the '71 while only one on the '67.

The cowl on the '71 has some bondo so I'm most likely going to attempt to swap the dash and cowl. Just hope that I'm not being to ambitious about this. It all seems simple enough, its only sheet metal right? Also I noticed the dash, the firewall, and the cowl are all spot welded together, but the firewall (atleast on the '71) skips about six inches, welded for two, skips six, and welded for two all along the seem.

I have vacation starting next week, but unfortunately I have to go on a cruise to the Southern Caribbean, but on the bright side I have more vacation time then work time left in the year!!!! Three weeks in December.

If any of ya'll ever done a dash/cowl swap, I'm open to advice what to do or not do. I've got my own ideas but others are welcomed.

Made more progress, slowly.

Over the next couple of weeks I can start sandblasting the frame. I found full sheets of the thick poly, used only once but free. I plan on putting that up around the frame before I sandblast to try and contain everything to a small area. Hopefully Santa will bring me the paint gun I want for Christmas.
