Any step by step instructions for front coil spring removal?

Post by Damon23 »

I need to replace the passenger side spring. I'll do shocks as well but looking at them it is not like the upper and lower control arms that I'm used to. Any help would be appreciated.

Never mind. Did a google search and it found a write up done here. Ordered the moog cc808 and I'll sneak out of work and go down summit in the morning and pick them up. Just hope I don't break those retainers.

My coils just fell out when I removed the lower bolts, the upper retainers were long gone.
I replaced the retainers in mine with simple u-bolts. grind the u-bolts a little to make them fit between the coils and bend them so they fit through the top holes, then bold them on.

Way easy!

808's are a nice choice. I have a set in mine.

Thanks, picked the up today. Just hope they don't raise the truck up too much in the rear or I'll have to get the leafs re-arched. I'll fool with the springs some this weekend. Got the wheels and tires over the week so I have to paint the wheels and get the set up mounted. Its coming along.

808's won't raise the truck. BobbyFord suggested them for my truck and they did sit high at first but settled to correct height after about 24 hours. I have not driven with them yet though. Updates on my coil spring thread still to come. :D

They are a noticeable difference over 40+ year old springs. Combined with a nice new set of good shocks, it's a different driver altogether.

Got them swapped out. I was surprised how elementary it was. One thing I did screw up is I paid too much attention how the bottom of the spring was positioned compared to the old ones. The passenger side went in and twisted to lock and the bottom coil ended up close. The drivers side, well to get the bottom coil to line up where the original one was did not seem right. Well, it was not. The truck is sitting up a inch higher on the drivers side now. I'll loosen it all up and turn the spring to lock and bolt it all back up. Bed still leans back on the drivers side though. Going see about putting a shim or two under the rear drivers side bed bolt. I also noticed under the retainer on the drivers side that their was a piece that looked like a shim. It went from front to back and even looked like it was secured with the same bolt the retaining nut used for the bottom of the spring. The passenger side did not have that. I will investigate further.

The shocks were bad too. I compressed them and that was around 2:30 this afternoon and they still have not come back up. I'm going to assume the rears are in just as bad of shape as they all match. So far so good. Found another issue and that is the drivers side front brake is not grabbing. Pulls very hard to the right when I hit the brakes hard. Could be adjustment but it would have to be way out of adjustment.
