Got out the new to me 69. Found a issue

Post by Damon23 »

I backed it out of the garage and washed off all the grime and dirt. Looked at the truck the passenger side rear of the bed sits higher than the drivers side. I looked at the rear leafs and the driver side bottom spring sits almost flat. But the passenger side front sits almost a half to three quarters inch lower than the drivers side front. The bed looks like someone twisted it.

The PO told me the truck was parked for a very long time at a angle where the drivers side was down and the passenger side rear was up. I wonder if the rear springs are shot or could it be the front? I would think the passenger side front spring would have had less pressure while the drivers side front would have had the most pressure and the drivers side back would have had equal as much pressure.

Any ideas?

Some of these may be obvious but I have missed things right in front of me;

Is where it was parked when you looked at it level?

Are the tires the same size?
Some people put just anything they have around on a truck they are selling.

Are there any spacers or blocks on some of the springs and not others?

2wd or 4x4?

F???

Tires all the same size. Pretty level garage. I've been under it and all the cab mounts look good. Did not see any spacers under the springs either. One thing I noticed was the creaking when I lifted the truck with a jack. I tried to jack it up from the bumper to see if I can level it out. I'm no so certain I have just one problem. Just odd that the driver side rear of the bed is low and the passenger side front of the bed is low. It just looks twisted.

Alright, backed it into the garage and the passenger side front is still low but the drivers side rear is also low. I jacked it up to watch the springs. They creaked and popped as they unseated from the lower mounts but noticed way more drop on the front passenger side than the drivers side. I let it back down and had major camber issue on that same wheel. I then jacked up just that side on the I beam and it creaked again but sat back down with way less camber and now the bed seems to sit more level on the drivers side rear. I'm going to guess it is a front spring issue?

On level ground jack the rear up at the center, measure height at front. Pick a spot like top of wheel well.
Do the same but other end. Jack front up at center and measure rear. Should tell ya which end is the problem

I can't stand when someone asks a question and then never comes back to tell what the problem was so here goes. I've replaced the front shocks and springs. Removed a shim from under the spring retainer up front and that did nothing. After putting on the new wheels and tires I checked the rear shocks and just like the fronts they were flat as well. While replacing those I noticed marks on the spring packs and it looks like someone at some point rearched the springs. The passenger side has held but the drivers side has not. So, looks like it needs either new springs or find a good used one to replace the drivers side with.

It is nice to pull it out of the garage and not hear all the creaks and pops that it had before. It sounded like a spring was going to let loose when it I would pull out of the garage or bounce the truck. I guess since the shocks were flat the springs were doing the work.
