Pinion Angle Questions

Post by Bohman731 »

Hey guys, I am wanting to flip the rear leaf hanger on my truck but I am a little hazy about correcting the pinion angle. What exactly am I measuring and where do the shims go.

Is there a shim I could order before hand that would be a safe bet that would allow me to drive the truck after without having to wait for parts to come in?

My truck is a 71 f250 2wd auto camper special.

I'd measure the pinion angle before you change anything, then duplicate that angle after the flip. As to which shim, no idea, hopefully someone else has done it and can help you with that.
Retired and lovin' it!!!!!

Oh and I meant the front hanger not the rear shackle. Do you think a 4 degree shim would be a safe bet?

You nead an angle finder "aka" angle indicator, you can find them for under $10 all over, like summit racing, amazon etc.Measure your existing setup before you change anything, remove the driveshaft and set it flat on the ujoint mount on the pinion yoke, and measure across the rear of the tailhousing usually across the output shaft seal metal flange, they should both be close to the same angle in oposite directs, meaning the trans tail shaft will angle down usually 3deg and the rear pinion yoke will point upward at 3deg angle, basically zero'ing each other out. 3deg is pretty common on leaf spring vehicles. If shimms are needed the will go between the leaf spring and rear housing perch. Summit racing sells them for as cheap as $10. good luck
