1967 power steering problem

Post by prankster »

Hello,

I have a 1967 Bendix power steering on my f 100. I just replaced the pump recently just because I have a life time warranty and I felt like the pump started to sound a little "winy". I did not have any problems with steering until after I replaced the pump. Now the truck has begun to have loss of power assist after running perfectly while running an errand. After shutting off the engine and starting it again the power steering stopping working. I felt very hard to steer but I was able to nurse it home. At one point the power steering came back on line and made me over correct in a turn. This was very concerning. I have heard the box I have is the weaker of the the two. I don't plan on changing now but it sounds like the Bendix could be the problem. The unit is 15 years old and about 20,000 miles on it since installation. I do have headers and they are very close to the box. This truck used to be my fun truck and only driven on rare occasions. I have been driving it to work after a sudden change in employment and have had to replace several accessories now that the truck is 15 years after restoration and getting more use. Is there an easy fix? (sticky control valve or is this more serious?). Thanks in advance for your help.

Did you purge all the air out of your system? Jack it up off the ground and turn the wheel lock to lock about 10 times with the engine off to purge the air, check the fluid level then start the engine and go lock to lock several more times. If it still doesn't work maybe you got a bad pump. Where did you buy the pump from?

I raised the truck up on jack stands and turned the wheel from stop to stop 20 times with engine off. I then did it with engine on. I drove the truck and the problem was gone until....I shut off the truck , started engine and test if problem went away and was greeted with the problem returning. This problem of the power steering not working occurs after I have shut the truck off after driving for minutes or an hour. The problem seems to resolve after a while by its self. The scary part is if I am driving around a corner and the power assist returns it over corrects for the turn (very dangerous). I dont know if the remanufactured pump is the problem or the Box? I dont have a pressure gage that would go up to 600lbs to test the flow. Is it a stuck by pass?
