knocking sound from steering colum.
I am getting a knocking sound coming from the steering colum when turning or going over speed bumps and such. I was told the the rag joint needed replaced. Would that cause this?

If u have power steering check fluid level it may be low, or a bad pump. Low level will sure give u noises.

Sounds like bad steering column bearings, there is an upper and lower bearing. It's a little bit of a project so be sure to do a little research first. there's some pretty good diagrams on here. Sargentrs has a pretty good topic on this http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... hp?t=72274

Really not that big of a deal although you will have to remove the column to get it out where you can work on it. Might not even have to disassemble it all the way if you can get creative with backing up the column while you tap in the bearings. Getting them out from the front side would be hardest part but with a pilot bearing removal tool, you might be able to get it. They come out fairly easily and are easily tapped back in. You might get lucky and your upper column bearing could be ok, just the lower need replacing. That's how mine was but since I already had it out, I went ahead and replaced both. You'll have to remove the steering shaft, pull it out of the bottom, and the turn signal switch, pull it out and lay it off to the side but I think you can do both without having to remove the tube flange which is the bear to put back in. Lot of "mights"

Thx for the info. I don't have the tools or the time for this one Lol. Going to let the shop take care of it as I need it back asap.

I know that feeling. Tranny for my Dodge is at a shop for the same reason. Let us know what you find is wrong with it.
