Drums to disk
Hello I have a 69 f250 highboy. And I'm in the process of installing a disk brake front axle out of a 79 truck. I was wondering if I need to use the master cylinder out of the 79 truck? Or just need to install a praportioning valve?

Re: Drums to disk
A disc/drum master cylinder is required. A drum/drum master cylinder lacks sufficient volume to push the caliper's pistons.
Ya might be able to a 79 MC but the system will still need a proportioning valve or disc/drum combo valve regardless.

Re: Drums to disk
It would be best not use the MC off the donor truck. Get a brand new one from the parts store.
The most gain from the new disc brakes will be through the installation of a brake booster.

Ok thanks for the help. What about swapping the rear brakes to disks. I was thinking of getting an axle out of an early 90s super duty. Has anyone done this?

Swapping an entire axle or swapping drums to discs on a 9-inch?vancefish wrote:Ok thanks for the help. What about swapping the rear brakes to disks. I was thinking of getting an axle out of an early 90s super duty. Has anyone done this?
It's alot more effort with the former since it'll likely require relocating leaf pads and shock brackets. The latter is served by the aftermarket for which there is a plethora of options.
The most lo-buck 9-inch conversion is a JY swap: Pirate 4x4 Thread: 9-inch Rear Discs for Under $100
Then there are systems like that offered by TSM: TSM Manufacturing: Ford 9-inch Rear Disc Brake Kit

We are using a big bore master cylinder and disc drum prop valve from wild horse 4x4. We are installing a dana44 from a 78 in our 69. Doses your rear gears match your front?

I have a dana 60 in the rear not a 9inch. So that's why I was thinking of an entire axle swap.
Your questions about the ratio is a yes and a no. My rear end ratio is 4.10. But the front is a 4.09. They use to put a slightly faster ratio in the front to keep it going in a straight line I believe

How about a Wildwood rear disc brake kit? It's a bolt on job.vancefish wrote:I have a dana 60 in the rear not a 9inch. So that's why I was thinking of an entire axle swap.
