Leak at Adustment Screw on Steering Box

Post by Southcoast Bump »

I stopped into my local garage, same one that did my safety inspection and king-pins a couple of years ago; I was hoping to get a price for rag-joint replacement on my '71 F100, as I simply don't have the time right now for a DIY. They wound up adjusting the screw on my steering box, and the wander was even worse afterwards...unsafe to drive frankly. At any rate, I made some adjustments myself last weekend and she now steers better than ever! Problem is I now have a leak at the top of the steering box now, from around the adjustment screw....once I got into it myself last weekend, I found that they had reefed the adjustment screw down pretty tight, which I backed off and locked down once I found the sweet spot. Is there a gasket or an o-ring at this adjustment screw that may have been damaged? Could I have air in the p/s system that's creating too much pressure in the box? I did have to top up the pump, due to the loss of fluid from the leak, so I'm leaning towards air in the system and I've read up on the bleeding instruction in another thread. Any feedback would be appreciated so I start off in the right direction as time is precious...and yes, I'll not be going back to this shop anytime soon.

I don't know if there's a O-ring under the locking nut or not. I know the on hydraulic systems that some of the fitting have a locking nut that has a O-ring under them and it seals. Might want to give it a try and see if it will stop the leak.

Thanks Hazelnut, I'll give it a look this weekend! It seems to have slowed quite a bit now, but still it's one more leak I don't need :D
