1967 f-100 Ranger non matching brake drums
I have a 67 ford f-100 Ranger and I just swapped out a rear end with on from the salvage yard from the same year (9inch). After I installed it I noticed that the passenger side brake drum is wider than the driver side. When I removed it and replaced it with the original one it looks to have about a quarter inch gap from the backing plate. Can anyone tell why this is?

'67 F100 9-inch rear brakes are narrower than '68-'72. '67 F100 had 11" x 1-3/4" rear brakes. '68-'72 F100 had 11" x 2-1/4" rear brakes.
I'm not certain if the '67 F100 9-inch axles are narrower than the '68-'72 F100 9-inch axles or, if both the axles and the rear end housing on a '67 is different than the '68-'72 models (?).
Whatever the case, it sounds like someone improperly swapped a '68-later rear drum assembly onto the '67 rear end.
In order to correct this and to get the benefit of the larger back brakes with the correct housing and axles to match, you may be better off to just swap in a complete 9-inch rear end assembly from a '68-'72 F100.

Again, it's been awhile, but I recall changing several brake backing plates with different offset to match the bigger brakes. Pretty sure I did it to my F150.

Re: 1967 f-100 Ranger non matching brake drums
I am new to this forum but I have a very similiar rear brake drum issue with my 1967 F100 2wD. The truck was passed on to me recently and the first thing i noticed was both rear brake drums (the drums for a 1967 F100 2WD) did not entirely cover the brake shoes, about a quarter inch gap, the shoes are in fact the correct smaller 1.75 inch shoes, I have tried every available autopart brake drums from 1966 to 1976. I have the 28 spline axles, and while replacing the axle bearings noticed that the outer bearing race does not fit flush into the housing but does bottom out. The plate bolts up and torques fine. The differential tag indicates that this truck appears to have the original differential so is it possible that the housing has been changed out and or the brake backing plates, can anyone tell me what i should be looking for? I can send photos if needed.
