Seized Front Drum/Hub
Hi everyone.
I'm new here. Just bought a 1970 F250CS that sat for many years. The purpose is to teach myself some mechanics and teach my kids in the process. In the end i get a great truck and have some fun learning. I've done a bunch of things so far, got it running but need to get the brakes done next. I've only done disc brakes before and that only twice. As i said, just learning. I pulled the front tires off and found some problems right away. The passenger side is entirely seized, wheel won't even spin. Grease cap seized on too. I've got the driver side cap off and the wheel spins. Not sure what to do next. Would love to hear from you guys.

Re: Seized Front Drum/Hub
one of the rear drums on my truck was frozen to the hub and I beat heated beat heated used penetrating fluid and finally cut it off with a cold chisel and it was p.i.t.a.
if you have destroy the dust cap to get off it can be replaced, get it off because it will allow you to remove the drum.

low and ugly 72 longbed with a 360 converted to a 401 with performer intake and a 750 double pumper carb 260 cam and headers with a c6 auto and stock 9 inch lowered about 5.5 /7.

2wd or 4wd? If the caliper is seized up on the rotor, you're probably better off replacing both the caliper and the hub/rotor. Or do you have drums on front? If so, you can buy the drum at the parts store and have your old hub pressed on the new drum. As to getting it off, you might have to just break the drum, cold chisel and BFH, and cut the grease cap off to get to the spindle nut. The hub is also readily available. As long as you don't damage your spindle, you'll be fine.

Id get the wheel off and take the 5lb long handled sledge and beat around the drum. have had to do that plenty of times of drum brakes that have locked up. and or pull the truck or tug on it with another vehicle . should break loose though

Got the drums off. For future rookies like me on the front you have to remove the cotter pin and castle nut first.

Re: Seized Front Drum/Hub
Ok, next question. The hub and the drum are as one
and what God has brought together this man will try to separate. Any suggestions? There appear to be retainer rings on the bolts which are on the hub still.
thanks

thanks

Re: Seized Front Drum/Hub
Might not be as easy as you think. Not sure about yours but some of the wheel studs were swedged on the drum after the studs were installed. The better thing to do is take it somewhere and have the old drum pressed off and the new drum pressed on. Local tire shop did mine for my '64 Fairlane for $25. I tried with a hammer and block and had no luck.

Re: Seized Front Drum/Hub
Thanks. I took them in and had it done for me. All done in a flash. Now their ready to be put back on. I'll be replacing the cylinders, shoes and hardware first. Already did the master and brake lines to the proportioning valve. Hoping the rest of he lines will be fine.

Re: Seized Front Drum/Hub
I know it's already fixed, but I had the same issue and in my case it was the brake adjuster. I had to loosen all the way and then spray some pb into the adjuster hole and around. Then used a hammer.

Re: Seized Front Drum/Hub
What a pain!. I must have a blocked brake line from the proportioning valve to the passenger front side. I can bleed my driver side new brakes but the passenger side won't go. All the lines are so old the bolts are seized good and tight everywhere even with deep creep. Ugh.
