Installing disc brakes

Post by ricccola777 »

I've got a 68 F250 and found a 71 F250 fronted with combination valve and power booster. Can anyone show me where the combination valve goes and may a diagram?

The block valve (for all drum vehicles) is located on the driver side just below the drivers feet hugging the frame. same place for the combination valve a.k.a proportioning valve (for front disc rear drum vehicles. (interesting tid bit, people who choose to run all 4 disc brakes use block valves from all drum vehicles. that's my plan)

Bumpside trucks only came with a pressure differential valve, if the truck had all-wheel drums. In the case of Bumpside F100s, they only came with all-wheel drums since no Bumpside F100s came with factory front discs.

Beginning in 1968 ('68-'72), the F250s and F350s were available with (optional) factory front discs. In this case, the very same pressure differential valve that was used on the all-wheel drum trucks was also used on the F250/F350 with factory front discs. The only difference was the '68-'72 F250/F350 factory disc brake trucks also had a stand-alone Metering (hold-off) valve plumbed inline to the front brake circuit.

There were no proportioning valves used on the Bumpsides --not even on the F250/F350 trucks that came with factory front discs.

The multi-function (combination) disc/drum brake valves didn't come about in the trucks until 1973. It contained a Metering valve, a Pressure differential Valve and a Proportioning valve, all within the same valve body assembly.

so if I want to go through and put new parts in the brake system, can I get a new prop valve for a 73 and get rid of the block and valve on my 71 with factory front disks?

Yes. Get the disc/drum donor brake valve from an equivalent series '73-'79 Dentside. --even a brake valve from an '80-'86 Bullnose truck would work as well. The brake valve on my '69 F100 Ranger is from an '84-'86 F150/Bronco. The brake valve I just put on a '72 F100 Sport Custom came off of an '82 Ford F150.
