1972 f250 4x4 steering arm hitting the shock

Post by jpiercef »

whenever i turn the wheels to the right, the steering arm pushes back into the driver side shock. I have no idea why nor do I have an idea how to fix the problem. sorry the problem description isn't the best but I am new to working on older trucks, any help would greatly be appreciated

Have you changed the front shocks to a size with a bigger diameter ?

You should be able to limit the turning radius with the limiting screw.

I am using the same diameter of shocks and the limiting screw won't turn out any further

You might want to buy a longer grade 8 bolt and make a limiting screw with it.

If this started kind of quick then I would say start looking for something that's wore out that you could have over looked.

Manual steering, it has the small Dana axle and as far as I know, nothing has been changed. I've had the truck only a couple of months.

With a longer limiting screw, it would only allow me about an inch of movement before it hits the shock. Kinda seems like the shock mounts are too far forward

We need pics. Sounds like some one changed something before you got it.

Mine has the large knuckle 44 with a manual box and I have all kinds of travel without hitting the shock. Well as much as one would expect from a 48 year old closed knuckle design. If you have 8 bolts on the knuckle seals it is lighter duty version as opposed to the 12 bolts on the heavier one. Like it was said before we need some pics.

I'm in the garage with only my phone so I can't send a picture right now. However your knuckle arm does not look correct. I'm referencing the one attached to the axle knuckle. It should have a bend that offsets it toward the front of the truck. This would give you more travel to the rear before striking the shock. I'll try and get a picture and post it later.

Here is picture of my arm on 68 F250. Notice how the arm is offset allowing it to travel without hitting the shock.
