rear brake job

Hi everyone,

thanks for helping out in the past. Slowly working on/running for ice cream in a 1970 Ford F250 Camper Special. When i got it in January i did the front drums and a bunch of other stuff. At the time the e brake worked as well. Didn't touch the rear though as i thought the brake lines needed to be re run from the front. When my e brake went the other day i figured it was time to attack the back. Pulled axles and drums off and removed the diff cover and drained. Ordered new everything for brakes (drums, cylinders, springs etc) but will clean up the hubs with wire wheel and reuse them.

Couple of questions. Do i need to replace the gasket at the axle end? The metal is all there but it looks like there was some paper or something on the inside of the gasket up against the hub that is mostly gone.

is there a good walk through for servicing the brakes? There are several videos around that cover the front in detail but haven't seen anything for the rear at all. Am i on the right track?

Lloyd, your question about the seals reminds me of something: when I pulled my axles out, I found two metal gaskets installed on each side, and some amount of blue RTV (presumably applied as a condiment) in between them.

When I put the axles back in, I used a single metal gasket on each side (NAPA 55328); here's a photo of the gasket:



Here's page 11-14-01 from the 1971 factory service manual page which shows the gasket; it looks like nothing else goes in there, other than that single gasket (no papery pieces).

Since posting the initial message i found your brake thread from a few years ago. Thanks for the detailed information. It will be very useful. I ordered one set of gaskets so will put one in each side.

I have the 1970 manual. The detail is less than impressive.

Ugh! Already ugh! Both the parking brake retaining bolt and the brake line are rusted up real good. I've been spraying with deep creep but to no avail. Can i just cut yhe retainer bolt off and find a new one? I know i can cut the brake and replace it back to the distribution valve....as long as it will come off clean there

Hi guys

I got everything back together but a few problems. I had the Napa auto parts store /mechanics shop press my new drums to the hubs i cleaned up and they put the inner bearing in with the seal. I asked if they would lube the bearing and they said you don't need to as the axle oil is the lubricant. Just raise each side for a half hour and should be fine. Did that but now that it's all back together and out for a short test drive I'm hearing lots of squeaking from the bearings. Is that because they aren't lubed properly or not sitting right in the wheel (outer one)?

Also, as a testament to my skill level the diff cover is leaking a little oil showing i was too thin with the rtv when resealing it.
