E brake spring?

If I push the pedal down it does not come back up when released. You have to pull it up by hand. Should there be a spring built in to this or should there be one under the truck on the e brake cables ?

I think that the emergency brake pedal is pulled back by the springs on the brake shoes acting on the cables.

and there is also a return spring on the E-brake equalizer cable assembly. In the first photo, you can see the spring. It has a short lead and a long lead. In the second photo (after I've cleaned and painted) you can see where it connects. The short lead hooks onto the equalizer bar and the long lead hooks into a hole in the crossmember where the E-brake cables exit. And another photo from "the dark side" showing one from a '73.

I know this is an old post, but does anyone know the length of spring showed in picture?

As you can see in this brake diagram the spring is a little different than a normal spring, it is part 2A651 in the diagram. You might want to see if you can locate an OEM spring. Let us know if you need any places to look for one. There should also be a small spring that hooks on the brake release handle.

I just measured two of my trucks. The relaxed length of the E brake spring is 24 inches and the coil spring length is 4 1/2 inches. I guestimate the spring pull at about 20 pounds tension to keep the rear brakes relaxed. I have seen in emergency conditions only that a rubber tarp strap was used until the proper spring could be sourced and placed in the proper place. Either way the E brake needs to be relaxed under pressure or hot brake drums will happen and the worst case is a fire on the rear brake drums.

I actually found new springs available at LMC Truck Parts - Ford. Part number 45-4066 $7.95. It looks to be correct, give them a call 1-800-562-8782. Give them the part number and description but the website is very thorough. These folks are great to deal with on a project I am currently working on, a 1956 Chevrolet 1700 3 ton truck. 320HP LT1 350 V8, 4 speed, electric shift 2 speed rear axle. It not only hauls grain but hauls a$$ as well! Almost ready for paint. My next project is a 1967 Mercury Ranger 4X4 so will also be contacting LMC for continuing project parts for this as well. Have been purchasing parts from Mac's Antique Auto also. Let us know how that all works out.
